The fishing season that started on September 1st in the seas has brought one of the most abundant mackerel seasons in recent years, while the place of mackerel on the stalls is gradually being taken over by anchovies.
Fishermen state that they are experiencing the longest and most fruitful mackerel fishing in recent years, and they express hope for anchovies as well. Currently, the price of anchovies, which adorn the stalls at the Trabzon Fish Market, is offered for sale at 125 TL per kilogram, while a significant decrease in the availability of other fish species has been reported. Fish merchant Mehmetcan Örseloğlu mentioned that mackerel is slowly giving way to anchovies, stating, “We are having the most fruitful season of mackerel fishing in recent years. Mackerel is gradually giving way to anchovies. Hopefully, this season will also see a plentiful supply of anchovies, that is our hope. The public has a longing for anchovies. Hopefully, we will also have a good season for anchovies. The mackerel fishing has been ongoing since the beginning of the season, and perhaps we are experiencing the most abundant and fruitful season of the last 30 years. There has been no pause in mackerel fishing this season.”
Fish merchant Ahmet Çoğalmış noted that anchovies have been coming in more recently, saying, “Anchovies have taken over the duty from mackerel. It seems that the anchovy season will continue until the end. In addition to anchovies, other fish species are also coming, but generally, more anchovies are arriving. Anchovies are 125 TL, horse mackerel is 75 TL, whiting is 100-125 TL. This season has seen one of the longest seasons for mackerel fishing in recent years. It seems that anchovies will follow in the same way. Our hope is for the continuation of anchovies.”
Fisherman Gökmen Aydın stated, “Mackerel has started to decrease gradually. Right now, anchovies are not bad, priced between 125-150 TL per kilogram. Hopefully, it will be plentiful afterwards, so that the public can buy. Local anchovies have started to come out gradually, so there is not much demand right now. Whiting is 150 TL, horse mackerel is 75-100 TL, and mackerel is 150 TL. We can say that this is the longest and most fruitful season for mackerel in recent years. I think it will continue for another 10 days.”
