Biomimetic Smart Snake-like Robot: BIYROT 01
The biomimetic smart snake-like robot BIYROT 01 is a robot prototype developed inspired by nature. It stands out with its flexible structure and intelligent movements.
Karabuk University (KBÜ) Master’s student in Mechanical Engineering Murat Gökmen has produced the ‘Biomorphic Intelligent Snake-like Robot’ named ‘BIYROT 01’ using a real snake as a model with a 3D printer, capable of movement in challenging environmental conditions for exploration, observation, research, medical, and military purposes.
Development Process and Features
Supported by KBÜ Scientific Research Projects Coordination and under the consultancy of Ankara Medipol University Technology Transfer Office Director Dr. Associate Professor Cevat Özarpa, BIYROT 01 has high maneuverability and can move without getting stuck in obstacles like a real snake. The robot, which can be used for various purposes thanks to its sensors, can perform the movements of a biological snake as well as two movements that a snake cannot do.
- Can be used for research, observation, examination, exploration, medical, and military purposes.
- Consists of 11 parts, has 9 different joints, and 9 servo motors.
- Has maneuverability on 5 axes.
- Produced with 3D printers, providing energy and weight savings.
- There are cameras and sensors in the front, and power systems in the rear.
Areas of Use and Future Plans
BIYROT 01 has a wide range of uses from search and rescue operations to pipeline inspections and military field. The development team aims to make the robot autonomous and support it with artificial intelligence. Thus, the robot will be able to make decisions according to environmental conditions when necessary and can be used in different areas.
- Search and rescue operations
- Earthquake and natural disaster assistance
- Inspections in narrow areas where humans cannot enter
- Defense industry applications
