Strikes and Trash Problems at Buca Municipality

Due to a wage disagreement between Buca Municipality and the union, a two-day strike led to the accumulation of garbage in the streets and alleyways. This situation has drawn the ire of citizens, accompanied by bad odors and unpleasant sights.

Workers decided to go on strike because an agreement could not be reached during the collective bargaining negotiations between the Social Democratic Public Employers Union (SODEM-SEN), which conducted negotiations on behalf of İmar A.Ş., and the DİSK General İş İzmir Branch No. 5. With the workers going on strike, garbage was not collected in the city center, causing accumulated trash in the streets and alleys, creating bad smells and pollution that disturbed the residents.

Citizens’ Reactions

Senem Işık, a resident of İnkılap Neighborhood, evaluated the situation as follows: “We are in such a bad situation. It’s disgusting. Everywhere is filthy. We have children. Other neighborhoods are the same. We are fed up with this situation. It’s always like this. Trash is not taken away, it’s thrown on the ground. We can’t open our windows, we can’t ventilate our homes. This shouldn’t happen in a city like İzmir.”

Another neighborhood resident, Seniha Uysal, stated, “It’s very bad in terms of hygiene. It’s full of germs. The workers are on strike, and they have rights too. However, the bad smell is disturbing us. If the weather is hot, it will be even worse. The municipality needs to take precautions.” Another resident, Yahya Recai, also pointed out the situation by saying, “I am an adult, but there are small children. The surroundings are full of filth. It’s not a nice sight. The neighborhood is completely filled with garbage.”

An Agreement Has Finally Been Reached

On the other hand, it was reported that an agreement was reached in the collective bargaining process that has been ongoing since July between Buca Municipality and the DİSK General İş Union Branch No. 5. After the union management rejected Buca Municipality’s previous offer, they decided to go on strike and subsequently decided to end the strike after two days. It was stated that the municipal workers who returned to work today would receive a minimum salary of 43,600 TL along with all their rights according to the contract made.
