In Aydın’s Nazilli district, a ceremony was held on October 19th for the Muhtar’s Day. During the ceremonies, a visit was made to the grave of Gül Esin, Turkey’s first female muhtar.

In Nazilli, a wreath-laying ceremony was held in front of the Atatürk Monument located in İstasyon Square on the occasion of October 19th Muhtar’s Day. The ceremony was attended by Nazilli Mayor Ertuğrul Tetik, Nazilli District Police Chief Şafak Yıldırım, Nazilli District Gendarmerie Commander Captain Ahmet Refik Özsoy, Nazilli Muhtarlar Association President Mustafa Karaburun, heads of institutions, representatives of political parties, professional chambers, and NGOs, as well as muhtars.

After the wreath of the Nazilli Muhtarlar Association was laid at the Atatürk Monument, a moment of silence was observed, and the National Anthem was sung. In a speech highlighting the significance and importance of the day, Association President Mustafa Karaburun stated, “The muhtarlık organization, which forms the first link of the democracy chain, is the institutional representative of our state, representing the oldest example of local democracy. It is a rooted institution that has served as a bridge between our people and state institutions, representing all state institutions in the neighborhoods where our muhtars are located. It is among the institutions that renew themselves in modern times and is at the service of our people in joy and sorrow. I congratulate our muhtars who carry out the important duty of representing both the state and the nation on October 19th Muhtar’s Day.”

On the other hand, it did not go unnoticed that only about 30 of the 82 neighborhood muhtars in Nazilli attended the ceremony. The association president explained the low attendance by saying, “Our village muhtars could not attend the ceremony because they are busy with the ongoing olive and chestnut harvest. Only the muhtars from the district center attended the ceremony. There is no negative situation regarding our association.”

After the ceremony, a visit was made to the grave of Gül Esin, Turkey’s first female muhtar, at Eğriboyun Cemetery, where flowers were laid and prayers were offered. Nazilli Mayor Ertuğrul Tetik, who spoke here, stated that they respectfully remember Gül Esin, Turkey’s first female muhtar, and all muhtars who lost their lives while serving.
