In Antalya’s Gazipaşa district, agricultural engineer Yavuz Çetin recalled that due to the desire to make money and theft incidents, avocados were harvested early in recent years, saying, “Early harvested avocados do not ripen for a month once they are sold in exports and markets or in wholesale markets, because they are not ripe, and then they rot. As a result, the market for avocados is closing. Our producers and traders need to take necessary precautions.”
The harvest season of avocados, which are rapidly increasing in production in Gazipaşa, is approaching. Agricultural engineer Yavuz Çetin pointed out that early harvesting of avocados in the maturation stage has critical consequences and warned avocado producers not to harvest early. Çetin stated that early harvesting would cause losses instead of profits, saying, “The biggest problem in the formation of the market for tropical fruits, especially avocados, is early harvesting. Early harvested avocados do not ripen for a month from the moment they are sold in exports, in markets, or in wholesale markets, and after becoming rubbery, they rot. Therefore, the avocado market is closing.”
“Producers and consumers need to follow the harvest calendar and take precautions”
Çetin, who warned producers and consumers, continued his speech as follows: “It takes 27 days to reach the nearest point in Europe. Therefore, Turkish avocados are close to both Europe, the Middle East, and Russia in terms of geographical location. We can send them to the furthest point in about a week with our trucks. Another characteristic of early harvesting of avocados is the theft problem. If they could take every avocado at the right time, the possibility of theft would be significantly reduced. Avocado is a plant that is called green gold in the coming processes, and its cultivation areas are increasing day by day, and its recognizability is increasing. Since it is a valuable and healthy food, it is also among the intense recommendations of dietitians. Both our producers, our traders, and our consumers need to follow the harvest calendar according to the types of avocados and take precautions.”
Agricultural engineer Yavuz Çetin also provided information about avocado varieties; “Our Clifton variety avocados can be harvested from August 1 in hot regions with a hot climate and coastal areas, while in mountainous and high-altitude areas, the ripening period may extend until August 15. At this point, our producers and traders need to be careful.
We recommend harvesting Fuerte variety avocados around October. We already harvest these types in 2-3 stages as they ripen. As their oil content increases, their flavors increase, and ripening becomes possible. Our Bacon variety avocados are expected to be harvested in the first week of October. After that, their ripening may occur normally,” he said.
