In Burhaniye, a district of Balıkesir, the fifth Burhaniye Book Fair, attended by the esteemed Turkish cinema actress Perihan Savaş as the guest of honor, opened its doors to visitors this year.
The fair, organized by the Burhaniye Municipality on the promenade of Ören Neighborhood, featured a classical music concert and tango performance at its opening.
Artist Perihan Savaş expressed her feelings during her speech, saying, “I regretted not coming here before. Because I would have liked to be in a place that is so beautiful, that preserves so much greenery, where such beautiful people come together. I envied those who live here. We really have a people who do not love reading much. We all know this and accept it. But I am ready to do whatever I can to make this book fair attract more attention and go further.” Later, Burhaniye Mayor Ali Kemal Deveciler presented Perihan Savaş with a crown made of olive branches.
Burhaniye Mayor Ali Kemal Deveciler stated that he felt honored and proud to be together at the fifth book fair they organized. Deveciler said, “Today we see that our district of Burhaniye has become one of the most important centers of culture and art in Turkey. Over the past five years, we have shown special care for culture and art among the municipal services we carried out locally. There is a Japanese proverb that says, ‘Books are the medicine of the soul.’ Just like our body, our soul also needs nourishment. Book fairs are among the most magnificent places that create this atmosphere.”
In a speech at the opening, Balıkesir Metropolitan Mayor Ahmet Akın stated, “This homeland is a paradise. Every part is filled with different beauties and riches. It is a vast geography, but the beautiful people of this geography truly produce wonderful things. I say this from here, together with my 20 mayors, Balıkesir is Turkey’s shining star.”
CHP Deputy Chair Gülşah Deniz Atalar pointed out that culture is a way of life for the Turkish people: “Technology has certainly given us beautiful blessings, but it has also led to cultural degradation. We cannot even check what our children are reading on their phones, what incorrect information is there, where the correct information is. Because we, as parents, are not able to develop digital literacy as much as our children simultaneously. The book fairs here are very important. Books are very important. Correct information can only be found in books that have gone through a certain level of scrutiny.”
CHP Deputy Chair Gökhan Zeybek remarked, “The geography we live in is a cultural geography. Starting from Göbeklitepe, with its known history of 12,000 years, especially the Aegean and Mediterranean, as well as Thrace and Marmara, have shaped the known 3,000 to 4,000-year history of humanity for many years and have given birth to the vast majority of the values that humanity has produced in the name of culture. That is why it is called Anatolia. Each of us must never forget the historical issue that we are obliged to pass on all the accumulations entrusted to us by those cultures that lived in these lands before us to future generations while making decisions in this geography, approving a plan, or passing a decision in our municipal councils.”
After the speeches, participants cut the opening ribbon of the book fair. Subsequently, they visited the booths of the publishing houses. As part of the fair program, the observation terrace built by Burhaniye Municipality on the Ören promenade was also inaugurated. The fifth book fair will continue with various events until July 28. The Burhaniye 5th Book Fair, with over 100 participating publishing houses, was attended by master artist Perihan Savaş, Metropolitan Mayor Ahmet Akın, Eskişehir Metropolitan Mayor Ayşe Ünlüce, CHP Deputy Chairs Gökan Zeybek and Gülşah Melis Atalar, CHP Party Council Member Mehmet Tüm, Şanlıurfa Deputy Mahmut Tanal, former State Minister Önay Alpago, Didim Mayor Hayice Gençay, Bilecik Mayor Melek Mızrak Subaşı, Osmangazi Mayor Erkan Aydın, Ayvalık Mayor Mesut Ergin, Gömeç Mayor Melih Bağcı, and Edremit Deputy Mayor Coşkun Taşkın.
