In Niğde, which ranks 7th in cherry production in Turkey, cherries grown are exported to many European countries, mainly including Russia, China, Thailand, South Korea, Germany, France, and England. Niğde Governor Cahit Çelik visited the cherry packaging facility in Altunhisar district of Niğde and provided information about cherry production in Niğde. Governor Çelik stated that Niğde ranks 7th in cherry production in Turkey, according to the 2023 data of the Turkish Statistical Institute, the cherry production in Turkey reached 736,791 tons, and Niğde has a significant share in this production. Governor Çelik mentioned that in Niğde, 41,710 tons of cherries were produced on a total area of 26,610 decares in 2023, constituting 5.66% of the national production. Governor Çelik noted that cherry production in Niğde has increased in recent years in terms of area, attributing this increase to the absence of marketing problems experienced in other fruit types, especially the cherry production in Ulukışla district is largely aimed at export. The main cherry variety cultivated in our province is the 0900-Ziraat variety.
Niğde Governor Cahit Çelik stated that an estimated 42,876 tons of cherry production is expected in 2024 in Niğde. According to the 1st estimate data of 2024, 42,876 tons of cherries are expected to be produced on 26,820 decares in our province. This production is exported to many European countries, mainly including Russia, China, Thailand, South Korea, Germany, France, and England. There are a total of 2 cherry packaging facilities, 1 in Altunhisar and 1 in Aktaş district. These facilities play an important role in packaging our cherries according to international standards and preparing them for export. The successful performance of Niğde in cherry production demonstrates the agricultural potential of our province and the efforts of our farmers.
