Erkan Yeşilbaş, who was laid off by the DEM-backed Ipekyolu Municipality of Van citing the economic situation of the municipality, won the lawsuit. The court ruled for his reinstatement and also ordered a compensation of 300,000 TL to be paid. Yeşilbaş, who was hired by the Ipekyolu Municipality before the election and then his employment contract was terminated after the local elections on March 31 citing seniority and economic reasons, filed a lawsuit against the municipality. The 2nd Labor Court of Van decided that the termination was invalid, granted the reinstatement of the employee, and awarded him entitlement to compensations. Yeşilbaş’s lawyer, Cihat Demir, expressed his satisfaction with the decision made by the 2nd Labor Court of Van, stating that the termination of his client’s employment contract within the framework of the Municipality Law Article 49 and seniority was unlawful. The court decided on the invalidity of the termination, reinstatement of the employee, and payment of approximately 300,000 TL in compensation. Demir emphasized that the court’s decision sets a precedent in Turkey and highlighted the increasing trend of layoffs in municipalities after local elections. Yeşilbaş, who claimed to have been unfairly dismissed on May 31, expressed his expectation of this outcome, stating his relief at winning the case and hoping for a return to work. He also encouraged others in a similar situation not to give up and expressed hope for their reinstatement. Yeşilbaş’s colleagues, who welcomed his visit with applause, expressed increased hope of returning to work following this decision and stated their determination to fight for their rights.
