The 63-year-old camel breeder Raşit Durmaz in Denizli has been participating in festivals all around Turkey for 36 years to preserve the Yörük culture. Raşit Durmaz, who also owns a camel farm in Sığma Village connected to Sarayköy District, produces sacrificial camels, tour camels, and camel milk. He mentioned that they participate in festivals in all provinces of Turkey from Sarayköy district of Denizli, and offer camel rides and donkey rides in specific areas to the festival attendees. Apart from festivals, Raşit Durmaz stated that during the summer season, he serves tourists with his camels in Antalya and along the coasts. He said, ‘For years, I have been producing tour camels, sacrificial camels, and camel milk in one of the few camel farms in Turkey. During the summer months, I take tourists on camel rides in Antalya. I also participate in festivals with my camels. So far, I have attended many festivals held in various provinces of Turkey. I make an effort to introduce the Yörük culture and to offer people a different journey with camels. Loading the camels from the farm onto large vehicles and taking them to different parts of Turkey is not an easy task.’
He also produces camel milk. Raşit Durmaz, who mentioned that he also produces camel milk on his farm, said, ‘A female camel nurses her calf for 11 months. Camel milk is less fatty than cow’s milk, similar to mother’s milk, and especially rich in vitamin C. A nursing camel can yield an average of 2 liters of milk per day. After pasteurizing the camel milk, I deliver it to the recipient in a special package by cargo. Camel milk prevents diabetes. It particularly leads to positive developments in individuals undergoing type 1 diabetes treatment. It is possible to meet the daily requirement of vitamin B1 with a glass of camel milk. It contains more protein compared to other milks. Therefore, it strengthens the immune system while being a frequently preferred milk by athletes. Consuming camel milk for strong bones is recommended for child development. It positively affects the circulatory system due to its high iron content. It is heart-friendly because it contains healthy fats. It accelerates metabolism and balances blood pressure with its phosphorus and potassium content. It contains 10 times more iron and 3 times more vitamin C compared to cow’s milk. It is highly effective in digestion and stomach problems.’
