In Anamur, a district of Mersin, it was stated that transportation to Cyprus will be reduced to 1.5 hours with the pier prepared and the ferry rented. Mersin Governor Ali Hamza Pehlivan stated, ‘This is our closest point to Cyprus. A ferry with a capacity of 450 people has been rented. Flights will start in June. It will be possible to travel to Northern Cyprus Turkish Republic of Cyprus (TRNC) Kyrenia port from here in 1.5 hours.’ The pier built in Anamur, the closest point to Cyprus, has been prepared for ferry services. A company will be established with the support of the district governorship, Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and businessmen to organize the ferry operations. A 450-person ferry has been rented to ensure transportation from the pier, along with the customs building, to TRNC’s Kyrenia port in 1.5 hours. Governor Ali Hamza Pehlivan, who visited Anamur to inspect the pier, announced that the flights will start in June. Governor Pehlivan said, ‘This place was built as a ferry and seaplane terminal in 2019. In 2021, a building where units will be located was also built. From the day it was built until now, the issue was to assign a function here. We held meetings with our Anamur District Governor, President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and relevant friends to give a function in line with the purpose of construction. As Mersin Governorship, we expressed our willingness to take over the transfer of this place from the ministry. Last year, with the approval of the ministry, we took over the transfer. Institutions and business world in the district also formed an organization, established a company. We had detailed discussions. As the governorship, we granted the operating right to this company by leasing.’ ‘Transportation to Kyrenia port in 1.5 hours’ Governor Pehlivan, who stated that the customs gate at the pier is not functional, said, ‘A customs area is being created here now. We have a port authority, we are forming security units. Arrangements have been made here for passenger entries and exits, and they are still ongoing. I want to give a good news. Hopefully, ferry services to Cyprus will start from this pier in June. This is our closest point to Cyprus. A ferry with a capacity of 450 people has been rented. Flights will start in June. It will be possible to travel to Northern Cyprus Turkish Republic of Cyprus Kyrenia port from here in 1.5 hours.’ Pehlivan also pointed out that after the start of the flights, tourism boats will come and go, emphasizing that Anamur is a district with tourism potential. ‘We have given a function to this pier at just the right time. Road works that will increase tourism activity, along with transportation by sea, will not only serve Anamur but also other provinces of inner Anatolia from Antalya to Karaman, from Konya to Adana and Niğde. This is a beginning,’ he said.
