Izmit Municipality and Western Thrace Turks Solidarity Association (BTTDD) Izmit Branch commemorated the late Mufti of Xanthi, Ahmet Mete, with prayers on the 2nd anniversary of his passing. Izmit Municipality and BTTDD Izmit Branch remembered Ahmet Mete, who devoted his life to being the voice of the Western Thrace Turkish minority, on the 2nd anniversary of his death. A program was held in front of the fountain built in memory of Ahmet Mete, where rice was served and carnations were laid.
“He guided us with his struggle for truth and justice” Speaking at the program, Mayor of Izmit, Fatma Kaplan Hürriyet, said, “Ahmet Mete was a leader, a man of cause who left deep marks in our hearts. He was not only a mufti, but also a very valuable personality who defended the rights of our kinsmen, giving them courage and hope. He was one of the precious leaders who spoke the truth in the most difficult times. He became a symbol of justice and equality struggle in Western Thrace. The legacy he left behind continues to be a source of inspiration not only for Western Thrace but for Turkish communities worldwide. He guided us with his struggle for truth and justice, and we are confident that many more Ahmet Metes will follow this path. While paying our respects to the memory of the late Ahmet Mete, I would like to once again express our commitment and determination to his cause. Once again, I remember with love, respect, and mercy the advocate of the national and religious cause of the Xanthi Mufti Ahmet Mete on the anniversary of his passing, and pray that Allah may have mercy on him abundantly.”
“He did not give the slightest concession from his cause” Yüksel Öztürk, the President of the Izmit Branch of the Western Thrace Turks Solidarity Association, said, “Ahmet Mete was a passionate man for his cause. He was a great leader who was willing to pay any price, despite all kinds of difficulties and obstacles, and dedicated his life to the cause of the Western Thrace Turkish minority. His steadfast stance against the Greek state, which aimed to divide the minority, united the minority community behind him. He had to pay the price of imprisonment and heavy fines for his struggle to unite the minority. Despite all this, he did not give the slightest concession from his cause. It is our duty to walk tirelessly on the path drawn by Ahmet Mete, Sadık Ahmet, Mehmet Hilmi, Mehmet Emin Aga and many others.”
