Pediatric Surgeon Dr. Perihan Topçu stated that the best time for circumcision for children is during the summer. Parents are very meticulous about the age and season selection for circumcision. With the closure of schools, a long holiday period has begun for children. This holiday period is considered the most suitable time for circumcision operations for families. Dr. Perihan Topçu, Pediatric Surgeon at Medicana Bursa Hospital, said, ‘One of the most common surgical procedures in childhood is circumcision. With the closure of schools and the start of the holiday season, summer is the most suitable time for circumcision in terms of children’s health. When deciding on circumcision, it is very important for the child to go through this process with the least amount of distress and to lead a comfortable life in the future.’ Dr. Perihan Topçu, who expressed that the circumcision procedure is quite easy and now performed without any pain or discomfort using local or general anesthesia, said, ‘Circumcision can be performed with general or local anesthesia. Nowadays, such operations can be done much faster and easier, without causing any trauma to the child. Due to the very low health and infection risks for children, we recommend that children be circumcised during the school break.’ Circumcision should be performed by a specialist under suitable conditions. Dr. Perihan Topçu, emphasizing that the surgical procedure should be performed in hospital conditions, said, ‘Circumcision is a surgical procedure that is not difficult and can be easily tolerated. However, when not done properly, it can lead to permanent consequences such as loss and disorders of the genital organ. By performing circumcision in accordance with surgical standards, it is possible to avoid unwanted situations after circumcision. It must be performed by an experienced specialist, preferably a Pediatric Surgeon or Pediatric Urology Specialist. Otherwise, unwanted results such as excessive or insufficient cutting of the skin after circumcision, formation of bad scar tissue, deformity, severe bleeding, infection, or partial or complete loss of the penis head may occur. Therefore, circumcision should be performed by an experienced specialist in the correct place, at the appropriate age range, and in accordance with surgical principles.’ The most suitable age for circumcision. Another important issue that parents wonder about circumcision is at what age children should be circumcised. Dr. Perihan Topçu stated that circumcision should be done either before the age of 2 or after the age of 6. Topçu recommends circumcision before the age of 2 if there is a risk of infection or kidney diseases in children, and after the age of 6 under other conditions. Dr. Perihan Topçu said, ‘Circumcision in boys is a surgical procedure involving cutting the skin that covers the head of the penis to a certain extent and shape. Since it is a surgical procedure, it is best for circumcision to be performed in the hospital and even in the operating room. Circumcision must be performed in the appropriate age range. Circumcision between the ages of 2-6 in children should not be done unless absolutely necessary, due to the development of sexual identity, being self-centered, and being incompatible. If we circumcise during this period when the child’s sexual identity is developing, there may be fears of loss of manhood, called ‘castration anxiety,’ and irreversible harms may occur throughout life. Under no circumstances should we circumcise our children between the ages of 3-6.’
