Balık Gölü, located at an altitude of 2,241 meters in the district of Taşlıçay in Ağrı, is home to 110 bird species according to recent studies. Being the highest-altitude lake in Turkey, Balık Gölü stands out especially with its island in the middle. Seagulls from various parts of the region nest on the island in the middle of the lake for breeding. The lake, which is notable for its rich variety of fish and bird species, attracts nature enthusiasts. Traveling groups can observe seagull nests and newly hatched seagull chicks by coming to the island in the middle of the lake by boats. Studies conducted by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) last year revealed that Balık Gölü is also home to some bird species that are endangered. Species observed in the lake include Northern Lapwing (Vanellus vanellus), Common Pochard (Aythya ferina), Bearded Vulture (Gypaetus barbatus), and Black-tailed Godwit (Limosa limosa) which are listed in the Red List. Balık Gölü, an important destination for nature and bird watchers, continues to attract attention with its natural beauty and biological diversity. Visitor Seher Temel, who comes to the island, said, ‘This place hosts thousands of seagulls and birds with different feathers. Surrounded by rocks and blooming flowers among plants, it has a magnificent nature. I invite all of Turkey and foreign tourists here.’ Lütfü Yiğit, who has been living in Ağrı for 5 years, expressed, ‘I live in Ağrı and the eastern region is very beautiful, especially Ağrı is very beautiful. We invite everyone to Ağrı, to the highest and largest lake in Turkey, Balık Gölü, where we are right now. We are currently on an island in the middle of Balık Gölü. This island hosts many different bird species. It is a place where migratory birds come to stay, drink water, and enjoy nature. We invite everyone to this lake, to Ağrı, and to this island.’
