CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, who visited the municipalities won by his party in Malatya, stated that they will bring forest fires to the agenda of the Parliament next week and ensure the establishment of a commission. CHP Chairman Özgür Özel visited the municipality of Yazıhan in Malatya, which switched from the AK Party to the CHP in the last local elections, and met with the citizens. Addressing the crowd gathered in front of the municipality, Özel thanked the citizens who made the CHP the leading party again after a long time in the elections. In his speech, Özel evaluated the current agenda and mentioned the fires in Diyarbakır and Mardin where 12 citizens lost their lives. Pointing out that forest fires are happening all around Turkey, Özel stated that despite the technology and capabilities of 2024, it is necessary to look back at such serious difficulties and mistakes. He added that they will bring up the issue of forest fires in the Parliament next week with constructive and guiding proposals as the Republican People’s Party and will ensure the establishment of a parliamentary commission to look at the protection of the country’s forests with competent figures in disaster management from all over the world. Özel also mentioned the issues related to the agriculture sector in Malatya, particularly the problems faced by apricot producers. He emphasized the need to fight for the rights of Malatya and its apricot producers. Özel also addressed the housing issue following the earthquake that occurred on February 6, criticizing the government’s response and promises made regarding the construction of houses for those affected by the earthquake. He pointed out the discrepancies and uncertainties in providing housing for the earthquake victims. Furthermore, Özel criticized the discontinuation of rental support for tenants in earthquake zones and pledged to start a major campaign for this cause if necessary. He also mentioned the upcoming visit of the party’s deputy chairpersons responsible for the economy to the Minister of Treasury and Finance, Mehmet Şimşek, to discuss finding solutions to the economic challenges. Özel highlighted the importance of listening to the voices of the streets in politics and announced a large-scale rally called ‘Struggling to Make Ends Meet’ in the Gebze district of Kocaeli on June 30. Lastly, Özel condemned the attack on their party’s municipal council candidate in Pınarbaşı, Kayseri, emphasizing the importance of normalizing politics and abiding by the rules and laws for a democratic and just society.
