Six-year-old Demir Ünal, who attends kindergarten in Kayseri, leaves people amazed with his historical knowledge. The history prodigy Demir’s biggest goal is to have a conversation about history with Ilber Ortaylı, one of Turkey’s prominent historians. Demir, a student at Şehit Hakan Bayram Kindergarten, impresses with his knowledge of history. Despite being only 6 years old, Demir has a comprehensive understanding of Ottoman history. His greatest ambition is to engage in a historical discussion with Ilber Ortaylı. Demir explained Ottoman history to Bahameddin Karaköse, the Director of National Education in Kayseri Province, from the establishment date to the reigns of the sultans. Demir received applause from Karaköse and teachers for his detailed explanation. Bahameddin Karaköse, the Director of National Education in Kayseri Province, mentioned that Demir is part of the ‘exploring the universe’ project conducted by the Provincial Directorate of National Education and is highly successful in history. Karaköse stated that they aim to prepare children for life by helping them become good individuals, aware of their interests and talents, and equipped with the necessary skills of the century. He emphasized the importance of children acquiring our values, culture, history, and language realities through activities and experiences to prepare them for life.
Demir expressed his aspiration to meet historian Ilber Ortaylı and have a historical conversation, saying, ‘I initially watched videos. Then I decided to continue watching videos. Later on, the videos increased, and my historical knowledge expanded. I decided to continue further. Knowing our culture, language, and alphabet is certainly valuable. I feel good. My goal is to meet Ilber Ortaylı and have a historical conversation with him. I want to be a soldier because I love my country. When it comes to history, it is necessary to start with the Ottoman Empire first. Otherwise, the information gets mixed up. It is necessary to progress from the beginning to the end. For example, I made 2 rounds of history videos. Now, because I got used to it, I watch mixed history videos.’
Demir’s mother, Gamze Ünal, mentioned that Demir has more historical knowledge than many people, stating, ‘Actually, we did not guide Demir too much. It was his own interest. He had a great interest in Atatürk. After watching Atatürk videos, he became interested in the Ottoman Empire, which laid the real foundations of the Republic of Turkey. He watched all the videos from start to finish. When that was not enough, he went back for a second round. Despite his young age, he has a great interest in the Ottoman Empire. I can say that he has more knowledge than many of us.’
