Izmir Metropolitan Municipality is adding new stops to IZBAN, which is one of the important parts of the transportation network connecting the two sides of the city. While the construction works at Gürçeşme and Katip Çelebi are progressing rapidly, preparations for Asarlık and Koyundere stations are also ongoing. Continuing its efforts to provide comfortable, safe, and fast transportation service to the people of Izmir, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality is adding 4 new stops to IZBAN. In IZBAN, which serves on the north-south axis of Izmir, the rough construction of Gürçeşme Station between Şirinyer and Kemer stations, as well as the station to be opened in the vicinity of Katip Çelebi University in Çiğli, is ongoing. The stations, which have started construction in accordance with the demands of the residents in Gürçeşme, the students at Katip Çelebi University in Çiğli, and the residents of Balatçık, are aimed to be completed in the shortest time possible.
Uysal: Target is to complete before May 2025
Stating that the construction at both stations is progressing rapidly, Gülay Uysal, the Branch Manager of Suburban Systems at Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, said, “Katip Çelebi Station will serve between Ulukent and Egekent stations, while Gürçeşme Station will serve between Şirinyer and Kemer stations. Our reinforced concrete works are ongoing. Our ground improvement works have been completed. We are opening both stations in line with the demands from muhtars and citizens, and we believe they will be actively used. We aim to finish our stations planned to be completed in May 2025 in a shorter time. Katip Çelebi Station, which is 210 meters long, consists of two cross platforms. Similarly, Gürçeşme Station, which is also 210 meters long, has two opposite platforms.”
The number of stations will increase to 45
The project works for the stations to be built in Menemen Asarlık and Koyundere are ongoing. When the planned stations are put into service in the region between Egekent-2 and Menemen IZBAN stations, citizens will be able to travel comfortably on the rail system line. With the introduction of 4 new stations, the number of stops in IZBAN will increase to 45.
136-kilometer line
Turkey’s longest suburban line was put into service in 2010 between Aliağa and Menderes covering 80 kilometers. The Izmir Suburban System IZBAN line, built in partnership with TCDD and Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, was extended to Torbalı. Then, the 26-kilometer section between Tepeköy and Selçuk was opened. With the inclusion of Selçuk Station, the IZBAN line reached 136 kilometers.
