Teachers from Denizli, serving in Van, made a different activity to draw attention to plastic pollution on World Environment Day. The teachers, who opened a sail to Van Lake made from waste plastic bottles, gave a mini concert in the middle of the lake.

On World Environment Day, music teacher Hamza Oğul Yayan from Denizli Çallı, classroom teacher Oğuzhan Yaman from Acıpayam, and math teacher Furkan Yaşar, all serving in Van Erciş, collected waste plastic bottles to draw attention to plastic pollution. They made a raft from plastic bottles using wooden pieces, ropes, and duct tape. The raft, made in about 2 hours from plastic bottles, was lowered into Van Lake along with a paddle made from plastic bottles and wooden pieces. Hamza Oğul Yayan, who has been teaching music in Van Erciş for 3 years, boarded the raft with his clarinet and played popular songs ‘Belki’ and ‘Benim Yerime de Sev’ in the middle of Van Lake, while his colleague Furkan Yaşar accompanied with the guitar.

The event organized by the Denizli teachers in Van to draw attention to plastic pollution on World Environment Day was watched with great interest by the locals and foreign guests visiting the lake. The teachers explained that it takes centuries for thoughtlessly discarded plastic waste to disappear, and emphasized that everyone has a great responsibility to protect the environment and leave a clean nature for future generations.

‘We wanted to draw attention’
Music teacher Hamza Oğul Yayan, explaining that they wanted to organize a different activity to draw attention to plastic waste on World Environment Day, said, ‘To draw attention to plastic waste on the environment day, we made a raft from 70 waste plastic bottles. We sailed with the raft we made to Van Lake. We played our music in the middle of the lake. It was a very beautiful and different activity. Our event received great attention on social media as well,’ he said.

Classroom teacher Oğuzhan Yaman, mentioning that they received a lot of likes for the event they conducted online, said, ‘We shared the event we organized on Van Lake on our social media accounts. Our video received great attention. Our event was also highly appreciated by the people of Van,’ he said.
