Fishermen fishing off the coast of Silivri in the Marmara Sea caught 2 giant Lanternfish weighing 41 and 30 kilograms, much larger than usual. The fish, brought to the Turkey Marine Life Museum, amazed the onlookers. Two giant Lanternfish, 25 to 30 times larger than normal, were caught by fishermen in the Silivri waters of the Marmara Sea. The caught fish were taken to the Turkey Marine Life Museum in Beylikdüzü. Placed on a counter by the museum’s founder, Kenan Balcı, the 2 giant fish next to a normal-sized Lanternfish highlighted the enormity of the fish. Providing information about the interesting fishing method of Lanternfish, Balcı stated that the fish meat would be sold in a few days while the skeleton would be displayed for free in the mummified fish museum. The giant Lanternfish truly astonished the onlookers. Describing how the fish were caught, Balcı said, ‘They were caught with nets pulled by human force. Lanternfish generally love small fish, especially during their active times. They lie on the seafloor, waiting for small fish to pass by, waving their lanterns. When the fish mistake the lantern for food and approach, they catch and swallow their prey. They were caught off the coast of Silivri, much larger than usual. They live in caves in the depths of the sea. When the fish are active, they come to the surface and approach the shores. These fish were caught by a 5-meter boat. The larger one weighed 41 kilograms. Lanternfish are unique for being spineless, although their appearance is not attractive, their meat is very delicious.’ Witnessing the giant Lanternfish, a citizen named Şaban Çiçek said, ‘It’s impossible not to be surprised; it must have fish in its mouth, probably hasn’t had a chance to swallow them yet. It’s a pretty big fish. It looks interesting, I haven’t seen anything like it before.’
