Rapid Temperature Change in Ulukale Village Affects Mulberry Production

Ulukale mulberries, which are completely organically produced and have a geographical indication, are grown in Ulukale village, a significant mulberry production center in the world, affiliated with the Çemişgezek district of Tunceli, with an average annual production of 500 tons. However, this year, sudden temperature changes in the village had a negative impact on the mulberry trees. The fruits started to fall before ripening.

Producers’ Demand: Evaluation Within the Scope of Insurance

Necmettin Duman, the President of Ulukale and Bozağaç Villages Agricultural Development Cooperative, stated, ‘Due to the climatic changes this year, we are working in cooperation with the teams of the Çemişgezek District Agriculture and Forestry Directorate to solve the difficulties we are facing. As mulberry producers, we demand that such natural disasters be included in the insurance coverage and our losses be compensated.’

Producer Tarkan Altınoluk also expressed his opinion, saying, ‘We produce high-quality mulberries in Ulukale village according to world standards. However, we are experiencing significant losses due to damages caused by temperature differences between night and day. Our request from the government is to include such climatic factors in the insurance coverage to alleviate the producers’ grievances.’
