Ahmet Alan, a Computer Engineering student at Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University (MSKÜ), achieved a significant success by winning first place in Turkey at the Datathon 2024 competition organized by the Defense Industry Artificial Intelligence Competence Cluster (SAYZEK).
In the competition, participants were asked to develop a system capable of tracking locations by detecting man-made landmarks on satellite images. Alan demonstrated exceptional performance in this challenging task, surpassing 163 competitors from various universities and was awarded the first prize.
Ahmet Alan was invited to the Defense Industry Artificial Intelligence Summit held in Ankara to receive his first-place award. He received his award from the President of the Higher Education Council (YÖK) Prof. Dr. Erol Özvar, the President of the Defense Industry Prof. Dr. Haluk Görgün, and the Deputy Chairman of Strategic Systems Hüseyin Avşar, making Alan a source of pride for MSKÜ.
As a senior student in Computer Engineering, Ahmet Alan is working on artificial intelligence and large language models as a member of the MSKÜ Research Laboratories Center (ALM) Digital Technologies and Cyber Security (DTCS) Laboratory. Under the supervision of Dr. Enis Karaarslan, he is conducting research on identifying usable roads after earthquakes using convolutional neural networks (CNN) as part of the TUBITAK 2209-A project.
Alan also furthered his academic career by being accepted into the SAYZEK – ATP 2024-2025 thesis program.
Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University expressed pride in Ahmet Alan’s achievement and congratulated him on being the first in Turkey, wishing him success in his future endeavors.
