At the Mathematics School, the first and only mathematics-themed school in Samsun, students are learning mathematics with joy. Fun activities at the school instill a love for mathematics in students.

In 2023, with the support of the Samsun Young Businessmen Association, a building that was idle in the Çivril neighborhood of İlkadım district was renovated and transformed into the Mathematics School by the Samsun Provincial Directorate of National Education as part of the ‘Mathematics Mobilization’ project. Preschool, primary, and middle school students from every district of Samsun come to this school to learn mathematics through enjoyable activities. The school, which operates on an appointment system, has provided mathematics education to 7,000 students so far.

“We are reaching out to all students in Samsun”

Activities continue at the school, which makes learning mathematics incredibly enjoyable. Mathematics Teacher Büşra Ayar Aydın provided information about their activities, stating, “Our school is one of the projects carried out within the framework of the Mathematics Mobilization conducted by the Samsun Provincial Directorate of National Education. Our school opened last year, and this year it continues its activities from where it left off. Our students come to our school by appointment from all districts of Samsun. We want to show that there is a fun side to mathematics here and that it is not disconnected from real life. During the term, in addition to reaching all students in Samsun, students from Ondokuz Mayıs University’s primary education mathematics teaching program also come here to conduct activities. We plan to reach out to village schools that cannot access us and hold workshops there as well.”

Mathematics Teacher Betül Çalışkan stated, “In addition to mathematics achievements, we conduct mathematics activities related to daily life and nature at our school. We are working on mathematical details found in nature. Our students both have fun and aim to develop their thinking skills by relating mathematics to nature. Since the beginning of the term, our school has hosted over a thousand students. Our students willingly and enthusiastically participate in these activities.”
