Kucukcekmece Municipality organized a ‘Breast Cancer Awareness’ seminar as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month from October 1 to 31. In the seminar organized by the Human Resources and Education Directorate, detailed information was provided on topics such as ‘symptoms, diagnoses, and risk factors of breast cancer.’ The seminar emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and aimed to raise awareness among women.
“We create a personalized treatment process for each patient”
Prof. Dr. Selin Kapan stated that breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women, saying, ‘We currently have many effective weapons against breast cancer. In the past, we used to say that a hard, painless, and immobile mass in the breast is malignant and there is no treatment, but now we say there are many treatments. If we detect cancer early, we discuss various options with the patient during surgery. We have many types of surgeries, and we also have a variety of drug therapies to support this afterwards. Now we have smart drugs, and there are also many chemotherapy options. We ensure that cancer does not recur with radiation therapy. We create a personalized treatment process for each patient.’
‘With early diagnosis, deaths from breast cancer can be reduced to zero’
Selin Kapan spoke about the importance of early diagnosis and detection, stating, ‘In most cases, in stage 1, or early diagnoses, the five-year disease-free survival rate is 100%, while in those that have metastasized, we cannot keep the patient alive for five years. Every year, 5,000 women die from breast cancer because they have distant metastases. Therefore, it is vital for women to perform self-examinations and visit a doctor once a year.’
