In Kocaeli’s zero waste mobilization, the environmentally friendly district of Başiskele, which has an important role in the use of sustainable and renewable energy sources, hosted the Turkey Circular Economy Action Plan Studies.
The event “Pilot Studies Conducted to Demonstrate an Appropriate Model for Effective Implementation of Source Separation and Reuse” organized by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change took place in Başiskele over three days from September 2 to 4.
During the program filled with in-depth discussions on circular economy and sustainable waste management, expert presentations, and field visits, information sharing was conducted in many areas ranging from local governments’ practices to waste management systems.
In the training program, which was also attended by Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality and district municipalities, the Branch Manager of the General Directorate of Environmental Management, Hülya Çakır, detailed Turkey’s Zero Waste Strategies and the legal foundations of these strategies, providing information on how this system should be implemented by local governments and institutions. She emphasized the importance of good practice examples and awareness campaigns that support the success of the Zero Waste Management System.
Başiskele Mayor Yasin Özlü also met with guests at the Başiskele Social Facility Antique Meatball and Restaurant. Yasin Özlü elaborated on the efforts and investments made in Başiskele regarding zero waste mobilization, waste management, sustainable energy sources, and environmental awareness.
As part of the training program, participants visited the Başiskele Municipality Class 1 Waste Collection Center, where packaging waste, textile waste, vegetable waste oils, electronic waste, and waste batteries collected from every corner of Başiskele are recycled, and exchanged ideas after receiving information about the work done there.
