Ear Nose Throat Specialist Prof. Dr. Ülkü Tuncer stated that there is an increase in allergic cases with the arrival of spring, saying, ‘Especially with the arrival of desert dust, allergic rhinitis, asthma, rhinosinusitis, ear infections, and throat complaints have increased. It is necessary to keep doors and windows closed against desert dust, and taking frequent showers is also beneficial,’ he said.

Allergy and Respiratory Tract Response

Prof. Dr. Tuncer pointed out that allergy is a genetic disease, saying, ‘Individuals can be allergic from birth. We see reactions mostly on the skin in babies. As they grow older, it transitions to allergic rhinitis and asthma. Allergic rhinitis should actually be considered as the hyperactivity the nose shows against allergens. This hyperactivity is not only limited to the nose; all respiratory tracts, including the lower respiratory tracts, are also involved in the same response. Therefore, about 30% of those with allergic rhinitis also have asthma, and nearly 60-70% of those with asthma have allergic rhinitis,’ he said.

‘Sneezing is observed upon waking up in a constant allergic condition’

Prof. Dr. Tuncer emphasized that individuals need to observe whether their allergy is seasonal or year-round to identify the allergen. In year-round allergies, he mentioned that individuals experience symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion, nasal itching, coughing, and runny nose when they wake up in the morning. If this is the case, Tuncer pointed out the need to consider allergens at home, such as house dust, carpet dust, household pets, mold, or food allergies. ‘But if it is seasonal, and if it increases in certain seasons, then we should think more about pollens. If we consider pollens, we should be very careful about ventilating the house. It is important not to ventilate the house before noon. Especially with the arrival of desert dust in such situations, it is necessary to try to keep the windows and doors closed. Taking a shower when returning home is very beneficial. Washing the hair, body, and changing clothes are also effective,’ he stated.

‘Problems in the ear can lead to hearing loss’

Prof. Dr. Tuncer stated that these measures are not always sufficient and emphasized the need to relieve the nose with medications. If rhinosinusitis develops, he explained that it needs to be treated. Tuncer pointed out that rhinosinusitis may go unnoticed in children, especially in the ears. ‘Children with allergic rhinitis may unknowingly accumulate fluid in their ears. It can lead to hearing loss. It does not cause pain or fever. No one notices this. The child turns up the volume on the TV, or the teacher warns that your child is not hearing well. It is necessary to be careful about these issues. It is essential to have regular check-ups for children, especially those with allergies,’ he said.
