An interesting incident in the Local Administration Elections held in the district of Şiran in Gümüşhane affected the election results in Karaca Neighborhood. Voters who cast their votes to determine the neighborhood headman in the elections held on March 31st encountered an unexpected situation.

YSK Decided Due to the 6-Month Residency Requirement

The incident that led to the annulment of the certificate of candidate Volkan Yeniçeri, who was running for the neighborhood headman position, was the violation of the 6-month residency requirement. The Supreme Election Board accepted Lokman Şahin’s objection and decided to grant the certificate to the candidate who received the second most votes in the election. With the decision of the YSK, Lokman Şahin became the new headman of Karaca Neighborhood.

Lawyer Emre Balki: “According to the Election Law, there is a requirement to have resided in the neighborhood for at least 6 months in order to be elected as the headman. We determined that Volkan Yeniçeri violated this requirement for 2 days and lodged an objection with the YSK.”

  • A similar situation had occurred before in the village of Dörtkonak in Gümüşhane.
  • In the election held in 2009, it was revealed that the candidate elected as headman did not meet the residency requirement, and Hüsnü Oğur, who received 1 vote, became the headman.
