The increase in temperature values in Erzincan not only raises the usage of air conditioners but can also lead to serious health problems. Experts state that while air conditioners are used to feel comfortable and work efficiently in hot weather, they can also pose serious health risks to humans.
Experts point out that the most significant disease transmitted through air conditioning is “legionnaire’s disease,” also known as “air conditioning disease.” “Legionnaire’s disease is a pneumonia caused by a bacterium called Legionella Pneumophilia. This bacterium multiplies in the filter systems of air conditioners under suitable humidity and temperature, spreading into the ambient air from there. Outbreaks are often reported in hotels and hospitals, but isolated cases have also been documented. It has not been observed to spread from person to person. The most important routes identified for its entry into the lungs are respiratory devices, ventilation systems, and certain procedures applied to the respiratory tracts in hospitals.
The disease can more easily take hold in individuals with low body resistance. The incidence is higher in diabetics, alcoholics, chemotherapy patients, and those with chronic kidney and lung diseases. The most common facilitating factor is smoking,” they stated.
Experts also emphasized that it should not be forgotten that mold fungi that can grow in poorly cleaned air conditioners may cause allergic rhinitis and allergic asthma. They noted that improper use of air conditioning in vehicles can lead to issues such as sinusitis, ear infections, and facial paralysis. Therefore, while using air conditioning in vehicles, directing the air towards the windshield rather than directly onto the face and chest can help prevent these problems.
