In the new term, Osmangazi Municipality, which has signed many successful projects in social and cultural municipalism, examined the work ‘İnce Memed’ by the great Turkish author Yaşar Kemal with Editor-Sociologist Demet Çoraklı within the scope of the Osmangazi Thought Workshop project, which started in October.
Participants showed great interest in the program held at the Emek Talent House. In the first part of the event, editor-sociologist Demet Çoraklı touched upon the life of Yaşar Kemal, who made a mark in Turkish and world literature. Later, Çoraklı shared the story of ‘İnce Memed,’ one of the cornerstones of Turkish Literature, with literature enthusiasts, stating, ‘İnce Memed is a ‘social realist’ novel that tells the struggle of the villagers of Çukurova against landowners. The backwardness of the Anatolian people is conveyed to the reader in all its reality. The misery of village life, the dominance of village lords, and the rebellions among the villagers form the subject of the book. İnce Memed is a work consisting of a total of 4 volumes. The novel, set in the early years of the Republic, describes the general condition of the village people through the oppressions İnce Memed suffers from the village lord. While the author extensively depicts the development of thistles throughout the seasons, he compares the life of the villagers living in that geography with nature. İnce Memed has not only been appreciated in our country but has also gained international fame. The İnce Memed series, which is Yaşar Kemal’s masterpiece, is the longest-running work in the history of the Republic, written over 32 years. With translations in more than 40 languages, the poignant and dramatic story of İnce Memed has managed to touch the hearts of many readers.’

Demet Çoraklı emphasized the importance of İnce Memed, which beautifully depicts Yaşar Kemal’s homeland, Çukurova, in establishing a place for itself in world literature, stating, ‘Yaşar Kemal, who opposed the oppressions he witnessed throughout his life and did not bow down, has stood by the oppressed, the poor, and the villagers both in his political life and through his writing. It is our fortune that a writer who can use his pen so effectively comes from our geography. His value must be recognized profoundly.’

At the end of the program, participants gained in-depth knowledge about the work and thanked Osmangazi Mayor Erkan Aydın for bringing them together in beautiful events that greatly value cultural and artistic activities in the district.
