The opening of the statue made by sculptor Selçuk Yazıcı in memory of the legendary master Erol Ağan, known as the “Father of Gulets” and “Çolak”, was held in the Bodrum district of Muğla.

The statue of Erol Ağan, a master sailor who was a turning point in Turkey’s maritime history and introduced Bodrum’s Gulet Culture to the world, was unveiled today at a ceremony held at Ağanlar Shipyard in the afternoon. In his opening speech, Erol Ağan’s son, Erdem Ağan, said, “It is very difficult for a child to speak today. As the child of İnci Ağan and Erol Ağan, I could not feel a greater honor. I am sure my brothers share the same feelings. We hope to complete our time in this world with the same feelings in our children. I thank everyone who participated.”

In the ceremony, Orhan Dinç, the President of the Bodrum Chamber of Shipping, talked about the contributions of the yacht manufacturing sector in Bodrum to the country’s tourism and economy, while Mahmut Serdar Kocadon, the President of the Bodrum Chamber of Commerce, reminded that Bodrum gulets have received geographical indications. Bodrum Mayor Tamer Mandalinci expressed that Erol Ağan never gave up on sailing despite losing his right hand at the age of 11 and never abandoned his ideals, and he narrated Ağan’s contributions to Bodrum sailing.

Muğla District Governor Mustafa Çit stated, “Erol Ağan left behind beautiful children. They continue their father’s art. I thank them as well. I hope yachting and sailing in Bodrum reach the best dimensions.”

Muğla Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ahmet Aras also said, “Our grandparents and ancestors have gifted us these beautiful days. Especially in a geography like Bodrum, one of the most beautiful corners of the world, where maritime culture is prevalent, we have many masters like Erol Ağan among us. We feel great gratitude and appreciation for all of them. Thanks to them, Bodrum has reached these days and has become so well-known.”

After the speeches, the statue was unveiled. The ceremony was attended by Muğla Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ahmet Aras, Bodrum District Governor Mustafa Çit, Bodrum Mayor Tamer Mandalinci, chamber and NGO presidents, the Ağan family, important figures from the maritime community, friends, and loved ones.
