Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality signed a remarkable loyalty event on the 3rd anniversary of the death of the revival and homeland poet Sezai Karakoç, where poetry enthusiasts discussed Karakoç’s role in the spiritual awakening of society and his contributions to Turkish Poetry at the Orhan Gazi Cultural Center.
As part of the November cultural and art events organized by Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality, the revival and homeland poet Sezai Karakoç, who left his mark on Turkey with his poetry, was commemorated at an event attended by art enthusiasts on the 3rd anniversary of his death. In the loyalty meeting where poet Ömer Erdem and Prof. Dr. Yılmaz Daşcıoğlu were the speakers, Karakoç’s contributions to Turkish Literature were discussed, as well as his worldview and perspective on modern Turkish Poetry. The program emphasized that ‘Sezai Karakoç has shaped not only Turkish poetry but also our intellectual life, our spiritual awakening, and our social consciousness.’
Poet Ömer Erdem stated, ‘If it weren’t for Sezai Karakoç, the Second New would be an incomplete, one-dimensional modern poetry movement. Karakoç forms a unity with his contemporaries such as Cemal Süreya, Edip Cansever, Turgut Uyar, and Ece Ayhan, representing the language of the young, believing, urban, and modern individual, freeing modern poetry from being one-sided. Cemal Süreya and Ece Ayhan have also said, ‘The Second New is Sezai Karakoç.’ Great leaps can only be made together.’
Academic Prof. Dr. Yılmaz Daşcıoğlu stated, ‘In the modernization process of the 20th century, Sezai Karakoç stands out as an important model that bridges two worlds by closely following the West and current literary events, showing how to absorb traditional accumulation and reproduce it in a modern way, as well as how we can practically exist this accumulation in life. Instead of establishing a negative relationship with tradition, he has become an example that represents it healthily.’
In a statement made by Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality, it was stated, ‘Sezai Karakoç is an important thinker and artist who has shaped not only Turkish poetry but also our intellectual life. His ideal of ‘revival’ has gone down in history as a call for spiritual awakening and social consciousness. With his deep accumulation regarding Islamic civilization, original thoughts, and impressive style, Karakoç has brought the spiritual values of our nation back to the agenda with his poetry and ideas, and has been a source of inspiration for the revival of society.’
