Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Yusuf Alemdar stated, “Hopefully, we will initiate the green transformation from Sapanca, protecting the lake basin and securing the future of the lake.”
Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Yusuf Alemdar attended the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) held in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. Mayor Alemdar is engaging in critical discussions for Sakarya’s “green city” transformation at the conference, which addresses significant projects related to climate change, particularly the current situation in the fight against global warming.
On the first day of the program, Mayor Yusuf Alemdar held important bilateral meetings in Azerbaijan; he informed Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Murat Kurum about Sakarya’s eco-friendly investments, green transformation initiatives, and zero waste vision. Minister Kurum expressed that he closely follows Sakarya and wished Mayor Alemdar success in his endeavors. Minister Kurum also stated that they would provide the necessary support for the acceleration of green transformation in Sakarya.

In his statement, Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Yusuf Alemdar said, “We are engaging in various discussions at the summit where issues such as global warming, greenhouse gas emissions reduction, and green transformation will be addressed. Before the summit that started in Azerbaijan, we had the opportunity to meet with our ministers and counterparts, particularly our Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, Murat Kurum. We shared our efforts to build a green Sakarya with our Minister. We also conveyed the current status of our main drinking water source, Lake Sapanca. Our Minister is very sensitive about the protection of the lake and its future. He expressed that they could initiate the green transformation from Sapanca. Hopefully, we will start the green transformation from Sapanca, protect the lake basin, and secure the future of the lake. I would like to express my gratitude to our Minister for his close interest and support for our city.”
