In the Anamur district of Mersin, seed carbon cubes and seed balls were brought together with the soil as part of a sustainable afforestation project.

Within the scope of November 11 National Afforestation Day, a special environmental project was implemented in the terrace areas around the helicopter pad in Esentepe Neighborhood of Anamur. The afforestation event organized as part of the project prepared for November 11 National Afforestation Day was attended by District Governor Bilal Bozdemir, Chief Public Prosecutor Tanju Çatlı, Deputy Mayor Yusuf Karakuş, Deputy Chairman Seyfettin Ankay, Police Chief Hanfi Umar, District Mufti Mehmet Fidan, Gendarmerie Company Commander Senior Lieutenant Kadir Dölek, representatives of non-governmental organizations, political party representatives, and citizens. The project aims to contribute to nature by utilizing organic waste left over from olive oil factories.

Providing information on the subject, Anamur Forest Management Director İsmail Gübeş stated that the residue remaining after olive oil production is completely de-oiled and turned into a carbon-rich substance. Gübeş said, “The seeds of local natural species such as false acacia, sumac, and cat’s claw, as well as lavender, were added to this carbon structure to create seed carbon cubes. The seed carbon cubes were placed in soil that has been prepared for planting. Additionally, seed balls and potted lavender seedlings were included in the afforestation efforts. Seed balls were prepared by adding seeds to a humus-enhanced mud, which will increase soil fertility while supporting the strengthening of natural vegetation.”

An approach compatible with nature and considering ecological balance

This sustainable afforestation method stands out as a model that adapts to the natural structure of the soil and recycles organic materials. It aims for these special cubes and seed balls, enriched with natural carbon and seeds, to dissolve in nature without harming the environment and for the plants to grow healthily. This afforestation effort initiated in Esentepe Neighborhood of Anamur serves as an example for similar projects with the goal of leaving a greener environment for future generations.
