Within the framework of the ‘Farm at School’ project initiated by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Ministry of National Education in 2022, strawberry and vegetable saplings were planted together with students in Bodrum.
As part of the Farm at School Project, 200 strawberry saplings were planted in the greenhouse established in the school garden of Bodrum Mahinur Cemal Uslu Secondary School, which was selected as a pilot school in Muğla. After the planting of the saplings, which was carried out with great enthusiasm by the students, 9 chickens and 1 rooster were also delivered to the school for the coop established in the school garden.
Bodrum District Agriculture and Forestry Director Durmuş Çakır, along with officials from the Provincial Directorate of Coordination and Agricultural Data and Bodrum District National Education Branch Director Türker Yurtsever, came together with the students at Mahinur Cemal Uslu Secondary School as part of the ‘Farm at School’ project initiated by the Muğla Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry in cooperation with the Provincial National Education Directorate. They planted strawberry and various vegetable saplings in the greenhouse established in the school garden, giving the first watering.
Türker Yurtsever, the Bodrum District National Education Branch Director, stated that the project aims to connect primary school-aged children with agriculture and to learn production in a practical way. He said, “In this way, we aim for our young people to recognize agriculture, forestry, nature, and natural life while they are still of school age, to create awareness, and to develop a sense of belonging. It makes us very happy that our children embrace the project and closely follow the saplings they plant.”
Levent Uyan, the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry Coordination and Agricultural Data Branch Director, who delivered the 9 chickens and 1 rooster procured for the coop established in the garden as part of the Farm at School project, also stated, “Our students will learn not only plant production but also animal husbandry in a practical way. The first phase of the ‘Farm at School’ project, which was initiated in 2022 and covers a period of five years, was the planting of 30 fruit saplings, which took place in April. After that, we established the greenhouse and coop in the school garden. In addition, 9 birdhouses were also delivered to the school to be hung on trees around the school in order to protect natural life. With the practical training we carry out in the coop and fruit orchards, we are trying to involve children in the production processes. We are striving to provide them with a natural educational environment, as well as to help them love agriculture.”
