The central Meram District Municipality of Konya continues its periodic training sessions aimed at increasing the awareness of zero waste and environmental sensitivity among children and young people.
Meram Municipality continues to support the ‘Zero Waste Project’ conducted under the auspices of Emine Erdoğan, the wife of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and coordinated by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change. In this context, the periodic trainings provided to students by the experts of the ‘Climate Change and Zero Waste Directorate’ established within the Meram Municipality continued at Hatıp Primary School. The experts from Meram Municipality, who visited the school and provided information about recycling for the formation of environmental awareness, explained how waste, known as trash, can be reused through recycling. The experts also conveyed to the students what they can do in this regard through examples and activities. During the events, the products made by the students of Hatıp Primary School from recyclable materials were exhibited, and they explained environmental awareness to their peers through the shows they prepared.
“These trainings will strengthen both nature and our future”
Meram Mayor Mustafa Kavuş stated that they consider and support all zero waste efforts for a strong future and a clean environment, and he expressed that they view the events and trainings they organize to instill environmental awareness and sensitivity as part of this effort. Emphasizing that education is the foundation of everything, he said that education is also the foundation of environmental and zero waste policies. Mayor Mustafa Kavuş stated, “We believe that these trainings, which we organize for our children to raise awareness on a wide range from preventing waste formation to reducing waste, from the importance of separate collection at the source to protecting natural resources and adopting eco-friendly consumption habits, will save both our present and our future.”
“We are undertaking significant projects for a clean environment and zero waste goals”
Stating that they have signed important projects in the field of zero waste and recycling, Mayor Kavuş continued his statement as follows: “After the establishment of the ‘Climate Change and Zero Waste Directorate’ within Meram Municipality, our efforts gained momentum. We have implemented many projects ranging from converting household waste into energy, Mobile Waste Collection Centers placed throughout the district, to the Packaging Waste Collection Unit and the Zero Waste-Household Waste Bins placed at specific locations. The teams of the ‘Climate Change and Zero Waste Directorate’ are going door-to-door to instill environmental awareness in citizens through brochures and explanations, as well as through seminars and training for young people and children in schools. As a result of the intensive efforts, we have saved approximately 150 thousand trees, 2 thousand tons of water, 50 million kwh of electricity, and more than 2 thousand tons of petroleum in the last six years, providing an economic benefit of about 20 million TL to the economy. We need the support and sensitivity of all our fellow citizens to raise this figure even higher. We must achieve this together for our future, our country, and our economy.”
