The arrest of Esenyurt Mayor Ahmet Özer and the appointment of a trustee to the municipality were protested at the Nilüfer Municipality Council meeting. Following the statements of CHP Group Spokesperson Yücel Akbulut, CHP municipal council members reacted to the decision by holding up banners that read, “Sovereignty unconditionally belongs to the nation.”

The ordinary meeting of the Nilüfer Municipality Council for November was held under the chairmanship of Nilüfer Deputy Mayor Mahmut Demiröz. CHP municipal council members reacted to the removal of Esenyurt Mayor Ahmet Özer and the appointment of a trustee in his place. In his speech regarding the issue, CHP Group Spokesperson Yücel Akbulut stated, “We reject this decision, which is imposed on our mayor elected by the people of Esenyurt with their legitimate votes, who has no criminal record even with the clean paper provided by the state, and which disregards the will of the people.”

“We will not turn a blind eye”

Akbulut expressed that the CHP will never turn a blind eye to the deprivation of the people of Esenyurt’s right to access services and continued his speech as follows: “The people of Esenyurt will display an unprecedented solidarity in service. As the Republican People’s Party, we are determined to defend our people’s will against any kind of pressure and illegality, and to protect democracy. We once again call out to the political authority that tramples on the people’s will: The illegal operations you carry out against the elected officials of this country cannot overshadow our citizens’ commitment to the Republic and democracy. Until this illegality comes to an end, we will raise our voices in the squares, in the courts, and on all democratic platforms to protect the will of the people.”

After Yücel Akbulut’s speech, CHP municipal council members protested the decision by holding up banners that read, “Sovereignty unconditionally belongs to the nation,” while applauding.
