A ‘White Coat Ceremony’ was held for students starting their education at Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University (MSKÜ) Milas Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in the 2024-2025 academic year.
With the ‘White Coat Ceremony’ organized by MSKÜ Milas Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, the students who started their education this year were donned with white coats, marking the first step into their profession.
In his speech at the ceremony, Dean of the Milas Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Prof. Dr. Artay Yağcı, explained how the tradition of wearing a white coat originated. Yağcı stated, “In our Ahi culture, masters would accept young candidates stepping into their profession through a coat-wearing ceremony. The white coat ceremony is actually a reflection of our culture’s scientific profession education. Until the late 19th century, physicians generally wore black or dark-colored coats. However, it was recommended to use white coats to prevent the visibility of spilled blood, which could lead to the spread of microbial diseases. Our veterinarians began to wear white coats, which are also referred to as the color of hope and healing.”
MSKÜ Rector Prof. Dr. Turhan Kaçar addressed the veterinary candidates, saying, “Student life will feel both very long and very short. What is important is to make the most of your time as a student to improve yourselves and learn your profession in the best way possible. By wearing these coats, you have also taken the first step into your profession. I wish you all success in your professional lives.”
After the speeches, the protocol members present at the ceremony donned white coats on the students.
The ceremony was attended by Milas District Governor Mustafa Ünver Böke, MSKÜ Rector Prof. Dr. Turhan Kaçar, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Deniz Ülgen, Milas Deputy Mayor Bülent Sezgin, Milas District Police Chief Oktay Boydak, Chair of Muğla Veterinary Physicians Chamber Serkan Alpözen, along with students and their families.
