The Selçuk District Bus Station, which is a 50 million TL investment by the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, was inaugurated with a ceremony.
The Selçuk District Terminal, which is a 50 million TL investment by the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, was officially opened during a ceremony. The terminal includes social and commercial areas such as 16 minibus and 15 bus platforms, approximately 100 vehicle parking spaces (both covered and open), a café, a buffet, a market, and a ticket sales office.
Speaking at the opening, Selçuk Mayor Filiz Ceritoğlu Sengel stated, “This opening is the inauguration of an area that the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality has solely undertaken and taken on alone. Because local governments are valuable. Local governments can take action quickly. Local governments are public institutions. They are the public institutions that the people can most easily touch.”
Expressing that the district bus station is of great importance for Selçuk, which attracts thousands of visitors each year, Mayor Sengel expressed her satisfaction with the completion of the district terminal, whose foundation was laid in 2018, stating, “As you all know, due to the economic conditions in the country and some technical difficulties, the construction of this area continued for a long time. Most recently, my esteemed President Cemil came here and, feeling what we felt that day from his heart, gave the order that ‘Selçuk should now have a district terminal,’ and as a result, we are realizing this opening together with our hardworking colleagues.”
“If municipalities are strong, they can meet the needs of the people”
Emphasizing that local governments need to be strong to eliminate the inequalities and injustices caused by economic conditions, Mayor Sengel continued her words:
“If municipalities are strong, the Republic cities will be strong. If municipalities are strong, the needs of the people will be met quickly. Above all, strong municipalities have the power to eliminate the inequalities and injustices that have been created, especially as the people are falling into increasingly worse positions economically. 65% of the Selçuk Municipality’s budget comes from the Meryem Ana Parking Lot. This situation has been ongoing since the 1970s. In other words, the existence of Selçuk Municipality, the existence of Selçuk district, and the continuation of İzmir as 30 districts have depended on these values that have provided this budget since the 1970s. The people of Selçuk preserved these values even before institutions were established.”
“All our values have been protected by the people of Selçuk”
Mayor Filiz Ceritoğlu Sengel conveyed that the people of Selçuk have taken ownership of these values, stating, “All these values are entrusted to the people of Selçuk and belong to them. Unfortunately, we are facing the risk of being deprived of these revenues in recent days. Our negotiations are ongoing. All parties in Selçuk have formed a Selçuk Alliance to ensure that what belongs to us remains with us. Our greatest goal is to resolve this through consensus. I believe that no public institution or citizen, regardless of their political views, wants to see the extinction of a district, the closure of a municipality, or a lock put on a municipality.”
“May it be beneficial for Selçuk”
İzmir Metropolitan Mayor Cemil Tugay also noted that Selçuk holds a special importance for İzmir with all its values, stating: “There is no need to describe Selçuk. It is one of the most valuable cities in Turkey and the world. With its ancient cities, the Virgin Mary, and the castle with a view from the bus station, but also with its characteristic as an agricultural basin, including beautiful villages such as Şirince known throughout Turkey and the world, and most importantly, its wonderful people. It is an honor for us to be in the service of such a valuable city. We are planning many things. We are working for Selçuk. We are working for İzmir’s 30 districts. We are working for İzmir, but most of all, we are working for the Republic of Turkey and our people, motivated by our love for this country. Therefore, I believe that in the next four and a half years, we will hopefully open hundreds of facilities together, with one heart. May our Selçuk District Terminal be beneficial for Selçuk and İzmir.”
The opening, which took place with the participation of İzmir Metropolitan Mayor Cemil Tugay, was attended by CHP İzmir Provincial Chairman Şenol Aslanoğlu, CHP İzmir Provincial Board Members, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Secretary General Ramazan Tezcan, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality bureaucrats, district mayors, council members, representatives of political parties, civil society organizations, and citizens.
