The transfers of lands on the municipal council agenda to the ministry in the Yenişehir district of Bursa have been canceled.
The allegations that the lands in the district, which are widely discussed in the Yenişehir public, will be sold, including mosques, schools, health centers, and neighborhood headman’s buildings, were also debated in the council agenda. Although the transfer of real estate to the Ministry of Treasury and Finance and the Social Security Institution was on the municipal council agenda as compensation for the social security and tax debts of the Yenişehir Municipality and its subsidiaries, the land transfers were accepted unanimously without being voted on, blocking the transfer of land to the relevant authorities.
Speaking at the council, Yenişehir Mayor Ercan Özel stated that the transfer of four parcels of land in the district would be made to the relevant ministry to pay off the social security and tax office debts from previous periods, and that there would be no extra interest accruing each month. Özel said, “We all know that it is not legally possible for our municipality to sell the mosque, school, health center, and neighborhood headman’s buildings on two parcels of land. By giving these lands, we will also benefit the institutions that have buildings on them. There is no such thing as a sale. There are many examples of these transfers in Turkey. This is merely a transfer of lands. We all know very well that a mosque or school will not be sold as it has been presented to the public.”
Before proceeding to the voting of the relevant transfer item, the group spokespersons and council members from the AK Party, CHP, and MHP stated, “We will reject such a transfer. In previous councils, we supported the sale of 88 parcels of land. The money from here can be used to pay off debts.”
Upon this, Mayor Ercan Özel did not put the relevant item to a vote. The council unanimously canceled the relevant land transfers without voting on this item.
After the council, Mayor Özel made a statement on social media, saying, “In the Yenişehir Municipal Council Meeting, we did not use the opportunity to transfer municipal lands to our state to erase our debts within the framework of laws and regulations, as many other municipalities in our country do, with a unanimous joint decision. While there was an opportunity to quickly rid ourselves of our debts, we decided not to take advantage of the opportunity given to us by the laws, while many municipalities in our country benefit from it. I hope this decision will bring good fortune to our district.”
