Çankırı Provincial Health Director Dr. Hüseyin Sarıkaya stated that there has been a significant decrease in organ donation numbers and wrote a poem to raise awareness. In his poem, Sarıkaya emphasized the importance of organ donation, pointing out that the patients waiting for organ donations the most are dialysis patients.
Dr. Hüseyin Sarıkaya, the Provincial Health Director of Çankırı, stated that the number of patients waiting for organ transplants due to organ failure is increasing every day across the country. He noted that the patients waiting the most for organ donations are dialysis patients and called on citizens to donate organs. On the other hand, while the number of organ donations in Çankırı was close to 400 in 2018-2019, only 24 donations were made in 2024.
Provincial Health Director Sarıkaya wrote a poem to draw attention to organ donation during Organ Donation Week.
“The number of our patients waiting for organ transplants due to organ failure is increasing every day”
Dr. Sarıkaya stated that patients whose treatment is dependent on organ transplants can lose their lives, saying, “The number of our patients waiting for organ transplants due to organ failure is increasing every day in our country. The number of organ donations remains very low, and unfortunately, our patients whose treatment is solely dependent on organ transplants can lose their lives. Therefore, especially during organ donation week, increasing the number of organ donations and organ transplant rates to ensure our patients with organ failure can live healthier is among the goals of our Ministry of Health. As is known, November 3-9 is celebrated as organ donation week. Celebrating this week in the most productive and beautiful way can not only provide hope for our patients waiting for organ transplants but also raise awareness among our citizens and healthcare workers regarding organ donation. This will lead to a greater increase in organ donations. We want them to donate organs with the awareness that one day we or our loved ones may also need organ transplants. Every donation is a budding life,” he said.
Dr. Sarıkaya recited a part of the poem he wrote for Organ Donation Week, saying, “Let’s organize an organ donation campaign. Let’s invite our society to be sensitive. One day we might be in the same situation. We should know that one body can give life to five others. When we close our eyes to the world, let’s donate our organs to hopes. Let’s be a hope for hopes. Let’s be a life for people. Let’s receive the heartfelt prayers of those people.”
“Our dialysis patients are the ones waiting the most for organ donations”
Dr. Sarıkaya noted that there have been serious declines in organ donations in Çankırı, stating, “In the past, as Çankırı province, especially in 2018-2019, our donation numbers were very high. We had donation numbers reaching around 300-400. However, due to the pandemic, we experienced declines in our donation numbers. Unfortunately, in the first nine months of 2024, our organ donation number is around 24. Our dialysis patients are the ones waiting the most for organ donations.”
