MERCAN 100th Year Climate and Environmental Science Center is 1 year old.

Mersin Metropolitan Municipality’s Mercan 100th Year Climate and Environment Science Center, launched to raise climate and environmental awareness, celebrated its 1st anniversary. Opened in the 100th year of the Republic, the center hosted the ‘1st Mersin Science Festival’ for its first year and welcomed its 100,000th guest.

The Mercan 100th Year Climate and Environment Science Center, opened by the Metropolitan Municipality to increase climate and environmental awareness, celebrated its 1st anniversary with events. A special Mercan Science Festival was organized for the center’s 1st year under the coordination of the Climate Change and Zero Waste Department. After the opening speeches, a cake-cutting ceremony took place. Awards were given to the winners of the painting competitions held on the themes ‘Stop Climate Change with Your Imagination’ and ‘Space in Your Imagination,’ which were recently announced by the center and participated in by schools. At the event, children engaged in entertaining workshops featuring stage performances and robot shows. Students participated in various climate and environmental-themed workshops set up outside the Mercan 100th Year Climate and Environment Science Center, such as solar observation, examining microplastics and protozoa under microscopes, VR glasses, volcano experiments, WEX robot exhibition, 3D pen activities, STEM, woodworking with Ben Maker, balloon expansion experiments, and windmill making.

Metropolitan Municipality Council Member Hamit Mert Avcı advised children to explore the Mercan 100th Year Climate and Environment Science Center, saying, “Enjoy the science center, the experiments, and the observatories.” The center’s coordinator Duygu Ezici also mentioned that they not only celebrated the 1st anniversary but also hosted their 100,000th guest. Ezici stated, “We had a fruitful year filled with the results of our project. Today is a day when we take our internal events outside. We are letting children experience our experiments outdoors. We have volcano experiments, VR glasses, 3D pens, and many other experiments. We cut a cake to celebrate both our anniversary and reaching 100,000 guests.”
