Turkish Telecom, which continues its activities with the vision of transforming technology into goodness and benefit, has published its first Integrated Activity Report under the title “Value for a Sustainable Future.” In the report, which reveals not only the company’s financial successes but also information about its activities and long-term value creation goals, the company’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance for the year 2023 and its progress in sustainability were shared.
Turkish Telecom continuously develops its work that reflects its accumulation in the field of technology across all areas of life. In line with its sustainability strategy, the company published its first Integrated Activity Report, including its environmental impact, social benefits, digital equality, and contributions to the economy. The integrated report for the year 2023, published under the theme “Value for a Sustainable Future,” was prepared in accordance with GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) standards.
In addition to presenting the company’s financial and operational performance in detail, the report comprehensively addressed its progress in the fields of environment, social issues, and governance; it also highlighted the company’s contributions to the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and other sustainability indices.
Evaluating the matter, Turkish Telecom Financial Assistant General Manager Kaan Aktan stated, “We always prioritize our responsibility to lead our country’s digital transformation. With this responsibility, while shaping the future with next-generation technologies, we aim to build a sustainable future at the same time. This year, we are taking a further step as a company by presenting our Group’s environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance to all our stakeholders through an integrated reporting model. We structured our Integrated Activity Report this year within the framework of the fundamental pillars of our sustainability strategy: Trust Center – Responsible Business Conduct, People-Centric Focus, Community Contribution Focus, Climate Change and Environment Focus, and Customer Focus. By aligning the activities of our company with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, we highlighted our contributions to creating a fairer world in social, economic, and environmental terms. We can say that our Integrated Activity Report, which we prepared for the first time this year, differs from our previous activity and sustainability reports in three important features. Firstly, we present the total benefit we create as Turkish Telecom Group companies to our stakeholders for the first time by creating a value map. Secondly, in the Environmental Investments and Contributions section under the title of Our Natural Capital, we include our environmental contributions through energy and emissions management, responsible use and management of natural resources, circular economy, and waste management activities as well as concrete plans for the future. We focus our social contributions on the digitalization and digital inclusivity axes, where we lead with investments that reach every corner of Turkey in fiber and mobile. We believe that we have shared holistic and transparent information with our stakeholders in these areas. Lastly, for the first time, our comprehensive carbon inventory, prepared on a Turkish Telecom Group basis, is included in the Natural Capital section of our report. Compared to the previous reporting period, in 2023, we expanded the scope of our carbon inventory by including all our Group companies and calculated our Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions for the last four years based on the year 2020. With the establishment of the carbon inventory that includes all our group companies, we aim to start the SBTi target verification process by setting targets that will also include Scope 3 emissions in addition to our determined Scope 1 and Scope 2 emission targets. This integrated reporting is our first Integrated Activity Report, which includes our contributions to environmental impact, social benefit, digital equality, and economic contributions in line with our sustainability strategy,” he said.
“We are determined to leave a greener and digital world for Turkey’s tomorrow”
Stating that they achieved significant gains both economically and environmentally while fulfilling their environmental responsibilities through the energy efficiency projects they carried out, Aktan said, “As of 2023, we have saved 47 GWh of energy thanks to our energy efficiency projects. The IREC certificates we received and the energy savings obtained from the projects prevented a significant portion of our total Scope 1 and 2 emissions, reducing our emissions by 22% as of 2023. We continue our renewable energy investments without slowing down. In 2023, with the solar energy systems we activated at 100 base stations, we created a total energy production capacity of 0.3 MW, increasing the total power of our renewable energy systems to 4.3 MW. We aim to reach a capacity that will cover 65% of electricity consumption in the coming periods. Our goal is to reduce our Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 45% by 2030 and achieve net zero emissions by 2050. In this direction, our priorities include further reducing our environmental impacts, developing our energy efficiency projects, and continuing our renewable energy investments without slowing down. By adopting the principle of sustainability in every area of digital transformation, we are determined to develop projects that are sensitive to society and the environment, leaving a greener and digital world for Turkey’s tomorrow,” he stated.
