In Kahramanmaraş, following the licensing processes for buildings that sustained moderate damage during the earthquakes on February 6, strengthening operations have begun.

In line with the urban and construction vision in Kahramanmaraş, permanent housing, village houses, and on-site transformation works are ongoing in all areas. Strengthening works have now started for residential and commercial buildings classified as ‘moderate damage’ after the earthquake.

As a result of the inspections by the Provincial Directorate of Environment, Urban Planning, and Climate Change, along with relevant municipalities, the number of buildings that have been granted licenses for strengthening has been determined to be 1,250.

After the February 6 earthquakes, a total of 6,048 buildings were identified as having moderate damage by the Ministry of Environment, Urban Planning, and Climate Change.

Among these, 3,000 property owners applied to the Metropolitan Municipality for the strengthening of their buildings. After necessary inspections, the Metropolitan Municipality announced that 1,250 of these moderately damaged buildings could receive licenses. Controlled works have begun in residences where the damage status and strengthening needs have been determined as a result of detailed examinations by expert engineers. The strengthening process generally focuses on repairing the damaged sections and increasing the earthquake resistance of the entire building.

During the strengthening works for moderately damaged buildings in Kahramanmaraş, the damaged sections are primarily repaired. The firms that operate in strict compliance with regulations and guidelines, and meet all required documents and construction criteria, are monitored by the technical staff of the Building Supervision Directorate of Environment, Urban Planning, and Climate Change. Subsequently, strengthening works are carried out throughout the building.

Mehmet Erşan stated, “Strengthening work has begun on our building. Our rebar is being tied, walls will be built, and plastering will be done. Some of our citizens are renting, some are in containers, and these citizens will return to their own homes. “
