In Hatay, where Turkey’s fertile lands are located, farmers continue to heal the wounds of the disaster of the century by cultivating the soil. In the city with a high diversity of products, the harvest of sweet potatoes has now begun. Sweet potatoes, which farmers have started to dig in the Uzunalıç neighborhood of Antakya district, are known for having a different taste compared to regular potatoes. The sweet potatoes harvested in the region and sold across Turkey find buyers at a price of 20 TL per kilogram from the field.
“Last year, I harvested 12 tons of sweet potatoes; this year, I hope to harvest 15 tons.”
Fadıl Çiftçi, who expects to harvest 15 tons of sweet potatoes from his 5-decare field, said, “We are farming here. We are harvesting sweet potatoes in my 5-decare field. This year’s harvest is very good and the yield is nice. I am satisfied with the harvest. We started the sweet potato harvest. We are continuing our harvest today as well. Last year, I harvested 12 tons of sweet potatoes. This year, I hope to harvest 15 tons. Sweet potatoes are sold by the traders here, and they sell them to places like Mersin and Antalya. We sell them from here at 20 TL per kilogram, and the traders sell them for 100 TL per kilogram in places like Mersin and Antalya.”

Ayşegül Çiftçi, who is harvesting sweet potatoes, stated, “We plant sweet potatoes once a year. We plant sweet potatoes in spring and harvest them in autumn. The harvest is good this year, but it is less compared to last year. Just like every job has its difficulties, this harvest has its challenges as well. In the past, they were dug out by hand, but now it’s easier to dig them out using a digger.”
