The panel, titled “The Republic at the Beginning of the 21st Century,” was held at the Hoca Ahmet Yesevi Cultural Center by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of Kastamonu University. The panel was attended by Kastamonu Deputy Governor Hakan Kubalı, Dean of the Faculty of Education Prof. Dr. Ahmet Kaçar, and many academics and students. The panel assessed the effects and importance of the Republic in the thoughts of history, culture, and politics from a broad perspective. In his opening speech, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Kaçar, Dean of the Faculty of Education at Kastamonu University, emphasized the importance of the effects of the Republic on society throughout history. Prof. Dr. Kaçar reminded that one of the fundamental elements that shaped the social structure of the Republic was the opportunities for development it provided, especially in the fields of education, culture, and science, and expressed that these values should be upheld.
The panel was moderated by Prof. Dr. Şeref Demir, the head of the History Department. Demir informed the panelists and participants by addressing the social transformations in the early years of the Republic.
Later, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gülten Küçükbasmacı examined the effects of the Republic on folk culture with her presentation titled “The Republic and Turkish Folklore.” Küçükbasmacı highlighted the efforts and achievements made by the Republic to revitalize and disseminate folk culture, describing the Republican period as an important era in terms of folklore studies. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rabia Aktaş, in her presentation titled “Atatürk and Archaeology,” explained the importance Atatürk placed on archaeology and the changes this perspective brought to the Republic’s view of cultural heritage. Aktaş illustrated Atatürk’s interest in archaeological excavations and research with examples, emphasizing the contributions these studies made to Turkey’s historical and cultural accumulation.
Finally, Prof. Dr. Ercan Çelebi shared the effects of the proclamation of the Republic on the people of Kastamonu and the enthusiasm of the first celebration of the Republic in his speech titled “The First Republic Day Celebrations in Kastamonu.” Çelebi unveiled the traces of the celebrations in Kastamonu, accompanied by historical documents and photographs from that period.
The panel concluded with the presentation of certificates of appreciation to the panelists.
