The 101st anniversary of the Republic Day on October 29 was celebrated with a ceremony held in Didim. During the ceremony in the City Square, speeches were made about the significance and importance of the day, and awards were given to students who ranked in competitions.
As part of the celebrations, the district protocol first congratulated the citizens and students on the holiday. Following this, a one-minute moment of silence was observed; then the National Anthem was sung.
The speech regarding the significance and importance of the day was delivered by District Governor Can Kazım Kuruca. In his speech, Kuruca narrated the establishment process of the Republic. He continued his remarks:
“Our Republic is 101 years old, young and dynamic like an 18-year-old, ancient and strong like a 1000-year-old. There is no need to give examples from history to understand the value of our Republic, the importance of our Republic. A glance at the realities of the geography we live in, the conditions and circumstances of our geography is enough to understand the value of the Republic. Today, before the eyes of the world, Israel is committing atrocities by slaughtering more than forty thousand Palestinians in Palestine. This atrocity has also spilled over to Lebanon. Our southern neighbor, Syria, has been struggling with civil war for 13 years. When you immediately head east, Iraq has been dealing with internal turmoil and wars for 30 years. When you look at its immediate northern neighbor, Iran, conflicts have begun on the verge of war with Israel. When you go further north, our Azerbaijani brothers have rightfully reclaimed their lands, as pure as their mothers’ milk, between Azerbaijan and Armenia. When we look at our northern neighbors, Russia and Ukraine, we see a war that has turned the region into a lake of tears and blood for two years since 2022. Just by analyzing our own geography today, we understand the value of our Republic much better at its 101st year. This is precisely why, on October 29, 1923, it declared the Republic, the most suitable form of governance for the character of the Turkish nation, and bestowed it upon us. How fortunate we are that one hundred and one years later, thanks to our Republic, we are still standing tall, still strong, still on our feet in such a challenging geography.”
After the speech, middle and high school students made speeches about the significance of the day and recited poems. As part of the celebrations, folk dance teams performed their shows; little students showcased their musical performances. The waltz performance of middle school students received great admiration, while the lives and successes of famous athletes who have achieved success in sports since 1923 were reflected by the students. During the celebrations, gifts were presented by the district protocol to students who ranked in the 29 October Painting, Poetry, and Composition competitions. The ceremony concluded with a formal parade.
The ceremony in the Didim City Square was attended by District Governor Can Kazım Kuruca, Didim Garrison Commander Colonel Erkut Arslan, Didim Mayor Hatice Gençay, Didim Chief Public Prosecutor Anıl Altay, department heads, district heads and managers of political parties, chamber heads and managers, representatives of non-governmental organizations, military officials, citizens, teachers, and students.
