The M2 Yenikapı-Hacıosman Metro at Taksim Square is experiencing escalator and elevator malfunctions, causing issues for many citizens, especially those with disabilities. Disabled citizens who were unable to use the elevators and escalators during the Republic Day celebrations on October 29 are looking for a solution from the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM).

The elevator and escalator malfunctions at the M2 Yenikapı – Hacıosman Metro Taksim Station have been ongoing for a long time. Citizens, particularly those with disabilities, are suffering due to the crowding while trying to enter and exit the metro. Citizens have stated that the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) has not taken the necessary steps to resolve the malfunction issues. Those with strollers and individuals with disabilities waiting at the escalator and elevator entrance of the metro have turned to alternative transportation methods.

“This situation can cause serious problems”

Sami Akdağ stated that the ongoing malfunctions could lead to serious issues, saying, “This situation can cause serious problems. Ultimately, Taksim is one of the important centers of Istanbul. It is beneficial for the public interest that such disruptions are identified, acknowledged, and shared with the public, as I see that the majority of people using these escalators are tourists coming to our country. We need to emphasize quality in service to make a good impression. I commend the friends who identify such issues because this is a service to the homeland.”

“This situation is constantly the same in Taksim, it doesn’t work 3-4 days a week”

Ramazan Kayhan, who has a walking disability, said, “This situation is constantly the same in Taksim, it doesn’t work 3 days a week, 4 days a week. This elevator has not been working for 10 days. The other elevator was working, albeit poorly, but now that one is not working either. I am stuck here, I need to go but I can’t. My disabled leg, it’s a prosthetic, I can’t walk. Even if I manage to walk, where will I put the car? I want them to help, but no one cares about the disabled, no one cares. Everyone does what they want.”
