The 101st anniversary of the Republic Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm around the traditional ‘sinsin fire’ in the Güdül district of Ankara.
In Güdül, as every year, the sinsin fire, which symbolizes the joy of the Republic and unity, brought citizens together and ensured the continuation of this cultural ritual.
Ceren Doğan, who stated that she regularly comes to Güdül every year, said, “It’s a tradition that has lasted for years. Since I was born and raised here, I have always come since my childhood. I took a leave from work to come today. Especially for the sinsin. I didn’t want to miss it. Normally, I live in central Ankara. I specifically came after taking leave from work.”
Cahit Gökmen, who wishes for this hundred-year-old tradition to continue, expressed, “This is a tradition that our ancestors have continued traditionally. We carry it on. Our children and grandchildren will also continue it traditionally after us. Hopefully, this tradition will continue for centuries.”
Serkan Baykal, who provided information about the sinsin fire, said, “Since the day Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk said, ‘Gentlemen, we will declare the Republic tomorrow,’ a Republic celebration has been held here every year for two days. The local people celebrate the establishment of the Republic of Turkey together. The Hunters Association first performs their shows. After that, the sinsin fire is lit, and games are played. These games represent a type of entertainment played in happiness to symbolize the declaration of the Republic.”
The sinsin fire symbolizes not only a holiday celebration for the local people but also a tradition of solidarity and unity. In this event specific to the Republic Day, the songs sung around the fire and the folk dances performed continue to keep alive the cultural heritage of Güdül and the spirit of the Republic.
