Turkey’s domestic and national submarine design STM500

Turkey’s first domestic and national submarine design for special operations and attack purposes, STM500, has successfully completed its robust hull test production. This marks the first time that test blocks of a combat submarine have been produced domestically in a civilian shipyard. STM General Manager Özgür Güleryüz stated, “We want to quickly realize the STM500 and make our country one of the rare countries in the world that can design and produce its own submarines.”

Turkey has passed an important milestone in its national submarine production journey. The robust hull test production of STM500, designed by STM engineers, has been successfully completed, including quality testing processes. For the first time in Turkey, test blocks of a combat submarine have been produced domestically in the civil industry using completely local infrastructure and capabilities. STM General Manager Özgür Güleryüz elaborated on the domestically produced submarine.

STM General Manager Özgür Güleryüz mentioned, “The submarine issue is really a challenging one. When you look at it, it is a product that has the same complexity as a spacecraft. The number of countries in the world that can design and develop their own submarines is very, very few. STM started its maritime activities with the modernization of the AY Class submarines owned by our Naval Forces, and we modernized two submarines. We continue our work as the leading contractor in the modernization of our fleet’s Preveze and Gür Class submarines. We are modernizing the French submarines owned by Pakistan. We have made critical localization efforts in the New Type Submarine, which is the most modern submarine of our fleet, the Reis Class. A significant amount of knowledge has accumulated at STM. Thanks to this, we have completed the design of our first domestic and national submarine, which we named STM500. On one hand, we are trying to help develop competencies for submarine construction in the civil sector. On the other hand, we are working on the STM500 project. We want to quickly realize the STM500 and make our country one of the rare countries in the world that can design and produce its own submarines.
