Seven months ago, Yazgül İkiz, a mother of three, went to the hospital to treat a cavity in her tooth in Eskişehir. After receiving antibiotic injections at Yunus Emre State Hospital, she began to feel pain in her left leg and started to limp. Despite visiting seven different hospitals, she could not find a remedy for her issue. Fearing permanent disability, Yazgül filed a complaint.
Yazgül İkiz, a 45-year-old mother of three living in Eskişehir, went to the Eskişehir Oral and Dental Health Hospital during the last Ramadan holiday for a dental issue. After receiving antibiotic injections, she went to Yunus Emre State Hospital. According to her claim, after receiving the injections administered by a nurse, Yazgül felt severe pain in her left leg. The unfortunate woman, whose pain did not cease, returned to Yunus Emre State Hospital. She stated that she did not receive support or attention from the Patient Rights Unit and limped home amid her pain. As her walking became increasingly difficult, Yazgül went to Eskişehir City Hospital for a check-up. There, she was prescribed medication but did not see any improvement.
Yazgül İkiz has been to seven hospitals over the past seven months. After not benefiting from the examinations and medications, she visited Eskişehir Anadolu Hospital. There, she paid 400 TL for medication but again found no relief. In seven months, the unfortunate 45-year-old woman has accumulated a box of medications while fearing disability. The woman, who only wanted to treat the cavity in her tooth, now cannot put weight on her left leg. Lastly, she stated that she went to the prosecutor’s office to file a complaint.
“I have not left a doctor without consulting, and I have not found a remedy for this pain,” said Yazgül İkiz, recounting her experiences. “On the second day of the holiday, I went to the dental hospital because my tooth was swollen. The doctor gave me medication and an injection. I received the injection and started to get it on the second day of the holiday. I used antibiotics and painkillers. Since my face was swollen, I immediately went to the hospital. When I first received the injection in the emergency room of Yunus Emre State Hospital, it felt very heavy. They looked and said, ‘You are taking 4 injections a day; it could happen.’ The next day I went again and said, ‘My leg is numb; I couldn’t sleep last night.’ After that, they told me, ‘Sister, you know too much; we know the injections.’ I did not receive any more injections after getting the injection three times. I had 15 injections. Two in the morning and two in the evening were being administered. I couldn’t bear the pain anymore, so I went back to the hospital. The nurse at Yunus Emre State Hospital did not attend to me. Then I wanted to see the chief physician. His assistant came and told me, ‘You need to go to the patient rights first.’ I went to patient rights and explained my situation. They handed me a paper and told me to file a complaint. I said, ‘I don’t want to complain. Whoever is responsible for this department should help me.’ The woman there called the director. She told me, ‘Go and apply to 182.’ I asked, ‘Who should I apply to at 182? Who is responsible for this department?’ I said I didn’t know. She didn’t care and sent me away. I was already victimized there. I am complaining about patient rights directly. All the doctors know me now. I have not left a doctor without consulting, and I have not found a remedy for this pain. I am in so much pain that my leg is pulling. I can’t step on my heel; I have collapses, and I can’t sleep at night. They prescribe green prescription antidepressant pills. I have not left a hospital in Eskişehir. I also went to Eskişehir City Hospital. Mr. Ilker told me, ‘It might have hit a nerve.’ He gave me medication. I took the medicines, but since it didn’t help, I went back again. He said, ‘You might have a herniated disc; go to a neurosurgeon urgently.’ I went to the neurosurgeon, and he said it was not related to him. So, I went from doctor to doctor,” she said.
“I am asking for help from the Ministry of Health.”
Yazgül İkiz, who could not find a remedy even in private hospitals, spoke about her complaint: “I also went to Eskişehir Anadolu Hospital, where Dr. Zühtü, a nerve and vascular doctor, examined me. He told me, ‘Yes, it might have hit a nerve, but I don’t understand this swelling. Go to a pain doctor.’ When I mentioned that I had already gone there, the doctor said it was not his specialty. I was going to get medication from the private Anadolu Hospital. The doctor first wanted me to make an entry, and I paid 400 TL. I am in a very bad situation both financially and spiritually. I went to the physical doctor at Yunus Emre State Hospital. He also told me, ‘It has hit a nerve, but I don’t think this is suitable for physical treatment. You will keep taking medication.’ I told him I couldn’t step on my foot, and he said, ‘It could be; the treatment process is very problematic.’ No one has stepped up to help. No one is taking this pain away. I am in a very bad state, and my psychology is deteriorating. I have visited every hospital for the past seven months, I have been to seven hospitals, and they have given me a lot of medication. I went to the courthouse and filed a complaint with the prosecutor. Last month, I spoke with the prosecutor himself; I requested forensic medicine. He told me, ‘It could be one year or one and a half years. You take care of yourself, don’t wait for me, and go from doctor to doctor,’ but the doctors are not helping. I went for my tooth and ended up losing my leg. I am asking for help from the Ministry of Health.
