Izmir Metropolitan Municipality will celebrate the Republic Day on October 29 with the grandeur befitting its name. In the 101st year of the Republic, citizens of Izmir, aged 7 to 70, will create a procession carrying a 350-meter Turkish flag. For the first time this year, representatives of sports clubs operating in Izmir will also participate in the parade where marches will be sung. The excitement will peak with a torchlight procession and a concert by the Multivoiced Republic Choirs.
Izmir Metropolitan Municipality has completed its preparations for the celebrations of the 101st anniversary of the Republic. It is aimed that the citizens of Izmir will participate in the enthusiastic Republic celebrations in large numbers. Inviting all Izmirians to celebrate October 29, Izmir Metropolitan Mayor Dr. Cemil Tugay said, “We are celebrating October 29 Republic Day, which our founder Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk left as the ‘greatest holiday,’ with enthusiasm throughout the city. In the 101st year of our Republic, we will be in the squares with all our citizens from 7 to 70 with the same faith and pride.”
Celebrations start on October 28
The Republic Day events in Izmir will begin on October 28 at 12:45 with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Atatürk Monument in Republic Square, organized by the Izmir Governorship. At 13:30, the “101st Year Event” will be held in front of the Izmir Governorship.
On October 29 at 10:00, Izmir Governor Dr. Süleyman Elban will receive congratulations from the city protocol. The enthusiasm of the Republic will continue with the celebration and parade starting at 10:30 in Republic Square. In the ceremony where the citizens of Izmir from 7 to 70 will come together, awards will also be presented to those who placed in competitions related to the October 29 Republic Day.
Band team in Izmir Metro
As part of the celebration activities of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Band will play marches and distribute Turkish flags to passengers at the Fahrettin Altay, Konak, Çankaya, and Bornova stations of the Izmir Metro between 13:00 and 15:00.
Air show by Turkish Stars
The Turkish Stars will also be in Izmir on Republic Day. The show will elevate the excitement of the Republic among the people of Izmir. Izmirians will be able to watch the breathtaking show from Gündoğdu Square between 17:30 and 18:00.
Torchlight procession with a 350-meter giant Turkish flag
As part of the Republic Day celebrations, an important event will be held organized by the Youth and Sports Services Department of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality. A procession consisting of protocol and citizens will gather in front of the Konak Clock Tower and walk towards Alsancak with the accompaniment of the Karşıyaka Municipality Band at 19:45. The procession will merge with the 350-meter Turkish flag and the torchlight procession in front of Konak Pier Shopping Mall and continue towards 1. Kordon. For the first time this year, representatives of sports clubs operating in Izmir will also participate in the parade where marches will be sung. Besides the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Sports Club, Altınordu and Göztepe, some clubs affiliated with the Amateur Sports Clubs Federation will also join the procession. At 20:30, there will be a fireworks show in Republic Square.
Concert by Multivoiced Republic Choirs
The concert by the Multivoiced Republic Choirs will be held at 18:00 in the Main Hall of the Ahmed Adnan Saygun Art Center (AASSM). The concert will feature the Turkey Polyphonic Choirs Association (TPKD) SmyrnAcapella, TPKD Selluka Women’s Choir, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Multivoiced Women’s Choir, and Izmir Bar Association Multivoiced Choir, with conductor Halil İbrahim Aydın.
“Republic Cup” on October 27
To spread sports awareness and culture, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality will organize the Republic Cup tournament for the first time this year with the participation of U12 male football teams as part of the Republic Day events. The tournament will take place on Sunday, October 27, at the Özdere 100th Year Youth and Sports Campus, featuring U12 male football teams from 8 clubs including Urla Belediyespor, Buca Belediyesi Youth and Sports Club, Buca Belediyespor, Sakinşehir Seferihisar Sports, 1923 Alsancakspor, Izmir Üçyol Youth Sports, 1957 Menderes Sports, and Gümüşordu. The matches will start at 10:00 and will be open to all sports enthusiasts.
Panel at APİKAM
The Ahmet Piriştina City Archive and Museum (APİKAM) will hold a panel titled “Social Change and Politics in Izmir during the Republic Period” on October 30, featuring Prof. Dr. Fevzi Çakmak and Assoc. Dr. Hasan Taner Kerimoğlu. The panel, organized by the City Archive and Museums Branch of the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Culture and Arts Department, will include Prof. Dr. Fevzi Çakmak from the Dokuz Eylul University Atatürk Principles and Revolution History Institute speaking on “The Republic, Atatürk, and Izmir,” and Assoc. Dr. Hasan Taner Kerimoğlu discussing “Political Life in Izmir during the Republic Period.” The panel will be moderated by Dr. Serhan Kemal Saygı, Branch Manager of the City Archive and Museums, and will be held at APİKAM between 18:30 and 19:30.
