The 5,000-year-old Diyarbakır Walls and the On Gözlü Bridge, which are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, have been brought to life through artificial intelligence.
Diyarbakır, which has hosted 33 civilizations, shines a light on the present with its centuries-old historical textures. The 5,000-year-old Diyarbakır Walls and the On Gözlü Bridge, which are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, are among these historical textures. These two ancient structures have been animated using artificial intelligence. The study discussed the historical textures of the structures and the challenges faced during their construction.
Adem Ulusoy told İhlas News Agency (IHA) reporters that he has been interested in artificial intelligence for about 2-3 years and has been trying to promote Diyarbakır’s history, culture, and texture in the artificial intelligence environment as much as he can.
Ulusoy noted that artificial intelligence initially produced visuals and has started to produce videos for about a year now, stating, “Right now, we can hardly distinguish it from reality. I expect it to be used for films or videos soon. In my studies, instead of animating photographs, I did a text-based study. I scripted it by writing instructions. Artificial intelligence will reach a point where everyone will be able to shoot their own movies or write their own songs from their seats. They will even be able to write their own novels.”
Expressing that historical sources indicate the construction of the Diyarbakır Walls began in the 2000s BC by the Hurrians, Ulusoy said, “One of the beautiful aspects of artificial intelligence is that you are trying to become familiar with history. The Diyarbakır Walls began to rise from the Hurrians. After the Hurrians, the Persians, Romans, Byzantines, Muslims, Artuqids, Seljuks, and Ottomans came, leading up to the present day. I tried to shoot two films using artificial intelligence. One is about the construction of the walls. We talked about the difficulties in building the walls. The walls are made of basalt stones. These basalt stones were formed as a result of the cooling of the lava expelled from the Karacadağ lava. We started by mentioning this in the film. I tried to make a film showing the difficulties in an adventurous manner.”
After completing the walls, Ulusoy stated that he conducted research for the On Gözlü Bridge, which is important for Diyarbakır, noting that written sources indicate the bridge was built in 1065 by the Mervani dynasty.
He mentioned that after researching how it was built, he tried to shoot a film by adding his own interpretation, saying, “Talking about the floods of the Tigris River at that time, it was necessary to build a bridge here because it had been a trade route for a long time. The Mervani ruler at that time ordered the chief architect to build the bridge. It is also stated on the inscriptions on the bridge that it belongs to that year. We must protect our history. Just as our ancestors preserved this texture, we must also take care of it.”
